The Pain

The world is experiencing growing personal, social and political fear, disconnection, polarization, cynicism, conflict, violence and authoritarianism. We face an enormous empathy deficit in our politics. Partisanship is extreme. This threatens our democracy and the well-being of all.  We need practical solutions.

Our Vision: A Culture of Empathy

It's not magic. I have experienced how well-being is nurtured and problems get resolved when people move from a tribal, 'Us Versus Them' worldview to a 'We Are All In This Together' mindset. To a worldview where:

  • Everyone's humanity matters.
  • Everyone feels mutually heard, seen and understood.
  • Everyone can constructively dialogue with each other and take collaborative action together.

We need a new kind of culture and politics based on these values.  This moment of historical crisis is an opportunity. However, it  will take full time activists and financial support to make this vision a reality..

How?

The Empathy Tent is a project of the Center for Building a Culture of Empathy, which I, Edwin Rutsch, started 11 years ago. For eight years I have set up the tent to advocate for an empathic way of being in a practical and down to earth way. I have been an empathy activist out in the public and facilitated; listening to all, constructive dialogue, mediation and training.

Since the 2016 presidential election, a growing team of supporters have brought the Tent to the front lines at contentious and sometimes violent political left versus right rallies in Berkeley and throughout California.

People always come by and say, "I'm so grateful for what you are doing here."  As the Sacramento Bee headlines state, "Protesters keep their cool at pro-Trump, anti-Trump rallies. ‘Empathy tent’ helps".

The values and processes we model, are successfully used in the healing, education, mediation, and creative design communities. We are now working to bring them into the broader cultural and political domains.

How Your Financial Contributions Will Sustain the Empathy Center and Movement

Movement building takes time, effort and expense, which I have self funded. This is no longer sustainable. I have found this work extremely meaningful in my life and my financial support has been well spent.  Unfortunately passion, dedication, hard work and persistence is not enough to heal the empathy deficit. It takes community based financial support.

I invite you to financially support the empathy movement, the center and my full-time work on this cause. Your contribution would be instrumental in supporting the vision of building a culture of empathy. Even a small monthly contribution from you can make all the difference.
