Fun Fact: The world's largest horse was a Belgian Draft named named Big Jake, a gelding born in 2001. He stood 20.27 hands (82.75 inches, 210 cm) tall!

The tiers are named after draft breeds in order from most common to the most rare, not us playing any favorites. :)

Belgian Draft Horses outnumber all other draft breeds combined in the United States.

The tiers are named after draft breeds in order from most common to the most rare, not us playing any favorites. :)

The number of Percherons declined substantially after World War II. However, the population began to recover and as of 2009, around 2,500 horses were registered annually in the United States alone.

Welcome to the herd!

Fun Fact: One horseshoe for a Clydesdale is roughly the size of a dinner plate. It will weigh at least 5 pounds. That’s about 4 times the size of a horseshoe that would be use for a Thoroughbred.

The tiers are named after draft breeds in order from most common to the most rare, not us playing any favorites. :)

In 1975, the official number of Clydesdales in the world was just 80. Today there are more than 5,000 that have been registered for this breed.

Welcome to the herd!

Fun Fact: During his reign, Henry II recognized the need to have a horse that could bear the full weight of a knight that was in heavy armor. The weight of the individual alone could be upwards of 400 pounds. Add in the weaponry and gear weight to that and many horses just couldn’t perform. The king looked for horses with specific characteristics that were needed, and that’s how the Shire horse breed was born.

The tiers are named after draft breeds in order from most common to the most rare, not us playing any favorites. :)

The Shire is listed by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust as "at risk", meaning that population numbers are estimated to be under 1500 worldwide.

Welcome to the herd!

Fun Fact: The Suffolk Punch is the oldest draft breed in the world. Even though these horses have the strongest "put-in power" in the world, they are the smallest horse in the draft community! Usually, draft horses are over 17 hands, whilst the Suffolk Punch horses are usually just 15.2 to 16.2 hands tall.

The tiers are named after draft breeds in order from most common to the most rare, not us playing any favorites. :)

There are fewer than 300 Suffolk Punches in the world. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust considers Suffolk punch horses to be critically endangered. They have been described as being “rarer than the panda."

Ben (pictured) is a Suffolk Punch who lived at Equiculture for ten years. He passed in July 2021. We miss you, Ben.

The tiers are named after draft breeds in order from most common to the most rare, not us playing any favorites. :)

American Cream Draft Horses are extremely rare and critically endangered. There are approximately only 250 of these beauties worldwide.

About Equiculture

WHO WE ARE
We are a small but mighty team of horse loving humans. We have a handful of amazing volunteers who put in their share of work when they can. In addition to our work on the farm, we are a hub in the community to re-home horses that need a forever home suited to their experience and needs.

MEET THE EQUICULTURE HERE

Equiculture is a sanctuary for retired, disabled and homeless working horses at Alderman Farm in Middlefield, MA. You won't find a stable at Alderman Farm. All our horses are free to roam dozens of acres with access to shelter for them to utilize as they please.

There are three retired/elder former working horses:
Silver

Thunder

Fallon

Three disabled horses:
Sarge

Mongo

Foxy

Four abled bodied work horses:
Thomas

Piper

Mario

Punch

Three Clyde youngsters, who will eventually move onto lives with others who will love and appreciate and share them as we do:
Maize

Blue

Star

And of course, our four cows:
George

Frankie

Cooper

Diego

We appreciate them all, with their unique personalities and experiences.

OUR MISSION
Our mission at Equiculture is to bring more understanding to the real value of the horses' contribution in the past, present and into a shared future as we care for them in our sanctuary.

In European and early American culture, there was a saying: show me your horse and I will tell you who you are. We are who we are because of our horses. Kingdoms defined themselves with their horses. The American framework of industry, distribution, and delivery was created with horses. Sadly, this important chapter in American history is largely forgotten with only remnants of it still alive. The skills required to work with and care for these large breeds is not as widespread as it could and should be, especially with the serious environmental issues we are facing globally.

It is our goal to restore an ancient connection that naturally heals and helps shape us into kinder, gentler, and more compassionate communicators and beings. Caring for our horses in need can lead to caring for our kind too. They are masterful teachers at helping us become the change we need to be in order to create the future we all deserve.

GENESIS
A Letter from Pamela Rickenbach Founder of Equiculture:

Many years ago I was a carriage driving tour guide in Philadelphia. I worked with a horse as a partner, giving time-traveling tours through the National Park. It changed my life. I realized that so often, these horses had nowhere to go when they retire. Not to mention all the horses that were given up on from the start. I had to do something about it.
Later, with a few friends, we started what we hoped could be a real sanctuary for working horses called Blue Star Equiculture. A space that allowed the public to participate in caring for and learning about them, especially their historical contributions and the future potential partnerships into the future.
For 11 years, we made an incredible difference in so many horses and humans lives that it would be impossible to recount it all. Last winter, before COVID 19, I decided to close Blue Star and carry on with the mission privately.
Now simply called Equiculture, this is that continuing work; a service that continues to unfold and take care of the retired, disabled and homeless horses we have grown to love. This time, I am determined to make sure that the fullness of this mission is realized; an integrated management and design system that includes all of life!
I continue to tell the stories of the horses. They are the most interesting and surprising teachers. They are friends to all. Each and every one is unique with different experiences, challenges, and personalities.
It is our hope to share the horses found on these pages, so that you too can begin to include them in your lives in meaningful ways that matter most to you.
We hope you join us with your love and appreciation for these noble friends and together we draft a better future for all.
