Exmoor Pony Project is creating Opportunities for Ponies!

Hi, I'm Dawn Westcott, co-founder of the Exmoor Pony Project and author of three real-life Exmoor pony books Wild Pony Whispering, Wild Stallion Whispering and Wild Herd WhisperingI'd like to invite you to become a Patron to help our work with Exmoor ponies - an ancient - and endangered - UK native pony breed, originating from Exmoor National Park (South West England), where the core population runs in free-living herds. Our quest is to help safeguard the ponies and to improve awareness, understanding and treatment of equines - and the way we connect with them - through our practical, conservation, welfare, education and creative work. This compelling journey is helping people to better understand ponies - and also to better understand ourselves.

What we do
We have saved the lives and facilitated good opportunities for many beautiful Exmoor ponies, including wild-born orphan foals. Our work is about building trust and understanding with these often wary and wild-natured ponies - and getting more people interested in the breed. We provide help and support to other breeders and owners - and help ponies find good homes, particularly wild-born foals who have to leave the moors in the autumn.

In a wider role, our work involves tackling some serious equine welfare and management issues and working to safeguard important Exmoor pony genetics - here in the UK and overseas (including campaigning to stop multiple hot branding of foals, unnecessary culling and obstructions to proper recognition for ponies). We sit on the Exmoor National Park Authority Exmoor Pony Steering Group and I am a member of the Exmoor Pony Genome Project team. We are both also co-founders of the Moorland Exmoor Pony Breeders Group (MEPBG). You can keep in touch with our work at www.WildPonyWhispering.co.uk and www.MEPBG.co.uk. And on Facebook at 'Exmoor Pony Project'.

Taming Exmoor ponies takes the time it takes and we go at their pace - and listen to them. We're developing natural management systems that help the ponies live in sociable groups, with their wellbeing the priority. We have over 30 Exmoor ponies in our direct care here on the farm  - every one of them is important and many of them would not be here today without this project.

I write books, articles, blogs and post on social media about our work with Exmoor ponies. We've done a little TV here and there too. Our supporters tell me they love to follow the photos and updates from the Exmoor Pony Project - and it connects people with the ponies, which can result in positive new partnerships and even save lives. However, this all takes time and resource and it's essential to find the income to run the project and care for the ponies.

Crowd funding can work quite well on a project-by-project basis - for example, when we unexpectedly rescued orphan wild-born foal Lady Luna in 2017. We also receive some welcome sponsorship and donations here and there. We need regular income to manage the ponies and to keep producing the creative material that promotes them. So I have launched this Patreon Scheme to hopefully contribute to giving the project some stability - and scope.  We are extremely grateful to the Patrons already supporting it.

I specialise in working with the ponies at liberty, individually and with herds - learning their language and how to connect and communicate with them. It is truly amazing to engage the 'herd energy' and be part of that.  Exmoor ponies, with their feisty and intelligent characters, are some of the world's best equine teachers - helping us to treat all equines with more kindness, respect and understanding. And better understand ourselves!

I've trained our wild-born Exmoor stallion Bear to win two world championships in international horse agility where he navigated courses of obstacles and challenges at liberty, even out in the 'wild'. He has astonished me with his ability to learn and respond and has shown me that we don't need ropes and restraint with horses - even stallions. We just need to build trust and inspire the ponies to willingly want to do what we're asking.

This is the world I'm exploring with Exmoor ponies and I need some help from Patrons to develop this work - and share what we're experiencing out there with the wider world.

As a Patron you'll be able to better get to know these beautiful Exmoor ponies and gain closer insights into the work we are doing here. I post photos, video clips and updates - providing some fascinating glimpses into the lives of the ponies and how we socialise, interact and train them. I'd like our Patrons to feel that they are part of the Exmoor Pony Project.

You can get to know your favourite Exmoor pony characters, like Monsieur Chapeau, Lady Stumpkin Pumpkin, Imperial Topaz, Tom Faggus, Lady Martha, Bear, Lady Luna and many more - and find out more about the herd lifestyles. You'll also share in the development and creation of my new books - and the next one is in progress!

This Patreon format is an ideal way for our supporters to stay close to what we're doing and feel part of it, while helping us to evolve the project. By spending a small but very significant amount a month to become a Patron you will be making a big difference to the Exmoor Pony Project. It will help the Exmoor ponies and help us to develop our work - and radiate out what we're learning to benefit everyone.

Let's grow this together - and Thank You for your support!

NB The Patreon platform is worldwide. It is in $USD rather than £GBP and they deal very well with the administration side of things, using PayPal as a secure global payment mechanism.

NB All content on this site that is labelled for Patrons only is not to be shared without our written permission. Many thanks for your consideration.
