About Gabbriel Schivone

Everyone from William Shakespeare to William Blake to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Nelle Harper Lee all relied on patrons who believed in their work. Today, writers like sci-fi/fantasy writer N.K. Jemisin and veteran investigative journalist Allan Nairn, and countless others, enjoy people's faithful patronage to supplement their research costs and time for their writing projects. I am proud to count myself among them.

For me, this patronage goes a long way to enabling me to keep writing, which I have the immense honor and gratitude to do for a living. In fact, I live words to mouth. Let me explain. I’m fortunate to earn $1/word for my investigative reporting on borders and gender, which pays the bills while I also write in other genres like my published fiction and graphic fiction. That means a good sentence buys me a meal. A published piece pays a few months’ rent. Keep in mind that refining sentences often takes hours (based on many more hours of reporting); a published piece takes months from a signed contract to the printed page.

Since 2018, I have been a Literary Fellow/Visiting Scholar at the University of Arizona's Agnese Nelms Haury Program in Environment and Social Justice. But believe it or not, I am not traditionally employable despite the appearances of my academic title, being contracted by a major trade publisher, and constant publication of my work. I never formally graduated high school. I have no formal training in anything I do. At the end of the day, all I have are my ideas that drive my work. Thus I go from fellowship to fellowship, book deal to book deal, freelance contract to freelance contract.

I also secure project-based funding in the form of grants from foundations. My favorite arrangement is when I receive grassroots sponsorship for the funding whereby organizations doing important activist work on the ground get all my work and decide how or if to pursue campaigns based on the research I’ve conducted. Some of these groups include School of the Americas Watch (SOAW) and Arizona-Palestine Solidarity Alliance.

I write within the following realms: lyrical nonfiction, narrative journalism and investigative reporting, literary/graphic fiction, memoir, drama, poetry, and screenwriting. Find me at gabrielschivone.info
