Hello! My name's Mark Brown and I'm the creator of Game Maker's Toolkit: a YouTube show that delves into the fascinating world of how video games are created.

I've looked at how Half Life 2 teaches you its rules without making you sit through a tutorial, how games have used adaptive soundtracks for innovative audio, and how Nintendo was inspired by Chinese poetry when making Super Mario 3D World's levels.

They're designed to be entertaining for those who just love playing games, but I also hope they might be useful for new developers who want to learn about design. The videos are short but in-depth, painstakingly researched, and packed with examples.

I've got endless ideas for videos on games, genres, ideas, and inventions - but I could do with a hand.

Why do you need money?

Well these videos take forever to make and I do them in my spare time - a little cash would help justify the long hours spent on them.

I also spend money on purchasing hardware and buying games. More cash means I can buy new releases as they come out and do more timely videos on the games everyone's playing and talking about.

Why Patreon?

I don't like YouTube adverts - so that's out. And I want my videos to be seen by as many people as possible - so paywalls are no good. And the thought of a sponsored video? A little uncomfortable.

So I've gone for the tip jar approach. Like my videos and want to see more? Please consider tossing a few quid/bucks my way! For everyone else: I have no current plans to make episodes exclusive to Patreon subscribers, so nothing will change.

How often will I end up paying?

Videos typically come out once or twice per month. (They take that long, once you account for research, script writing, video capture, audio recording, editing, and post production tasks.)

I chose to go "per video" for the payment setting, instead of "per month" to cover you guys if I'm ever unable to create videos one month.

But please note that Patreon lets you set a maximum amount per month, to avoid going over a budget. Use this feature wisely!

Anything to declare?

I'm the editor of Pocket Gamer, so I also have a full-time job in games journalism. Plus, the company owns some of the hardware I use in these videos (don't tell my boss!) so I'm not super put out.
