About Gareth Clegg

Hi there,

I'm Gareth Clegg, an author and Games Designer, and I love Patreon, and I'm guessing you do too. I am looking to get help with completing a Novel and a Tabletop RPG system set in the world of Fogbound.

Fogbound is a Steampunk adventure set in an alternate history London in 1899 after the devastating invasion described in War of the Worlds by HG Wells.

London, Sat 3rd March, 1899.
After the failed Martian invasion in 1895, London is now a corrupt and dangerous place. Brutal military police patrol the streets, enforcing a harsh curfew, while a vast steel wall around the city repels the toxic red fog that rises each night from the Thames.

Just five years ago, Sir Pelham Simmons lived a life of luxury as the Colonial Ambassador in Bombay. Now he is disgraced by a marriage to the wrong social class, stripped of both title and rank, but still doing his best to serve the country that rejected him.

While Simmons grapples with the guilt of his wife’s death during the invasion, he uncovers a conspiracy to overthrow Empress Victoria. He must learn to trust others to aid him in restoring the rightful monarch. Joined by a gifted inventor and a strange young woman who can alter the thoughts of others, he embarks on a journey to defy those responsible for treason.

But in the darkest and most fogbound areas of the flooded London streets, a sinister intelligence watches, biding its time until the hour of reckoning is at hand.

The novel is complete at 133,000 words and will launch on 8th Aug 2019 on Amazon.

This is the first of a three book series, and the rough outline for books two and three are already complete. I have also completed a couple of short stories and flash fiction set in the Fogbound world, so there's plenty more Fogbound goodness waiting for your patronage.

In addition to Fogbound, I have already started on a second novel which is around 15% complete for the first draft but has been put on the back burner until I complete the first Fogbound novel.

ArkZeroNine is the story of Yanik, a young scavenger within a vast Arkology that has lost track of the time since the breaking. A society that has reverted to a feudal state and knows nothing of the real history of their shattered and violent world.

It's more of a post-apocalyptic feel, with a mixture of old and newer technology within an immense vertical structure.

This novel, like Fogbound, is the first of a trilogy and will be offered for all of my patrons once compete in ebook format. Again, I need to work out the postage and how to facilitate that for shipping almost anywhere around the world without bankrupting myself, but I'll get there.

In addition to the two novels, I have several short stories, many of which are partially written already, plus ideas for many, many more.

The other side of this Patreon project revolves around the Tabletop RPG set in the Fogbound universe of the novel.

I've been a role-player for over thirty years, and the vast majority of that time has been writing and running games in collaboration with a great set of players. So with the novel came the idea for an RPG set in the same setting.

I love Savage Worlds, so the book will be produced for that system initially. If there is enough interest, it may be provided for other systems as well.
Current favourites are Call of Cthulhu, D100, or possible D&D 5E.

I am in the process of organising a Kickstarter project to fund the amount, and quality, of artwork I want in the book.

Having said that, I'm always open to ideas from all you lovely folk out there as to what you'd like to receive for your continued patronage - so feel free to let me know.

  • Well, to be honest, it gives me a residual income to help progress the books to be as good as they possibly can be. The money will allow me to engage professional editors, which is essential to get a different set of eyes on my beautiful handcrafted manuscripts of perfection. Well, near perfection - I wouldn't need an Editor if they were all that amazing after self-editing.
  • It will help with getting the word out to people just like you who would enjoy my style of fantasy and sci-fi. It creates a tremendous collaborative opportunity between us as you make comments on what you see, which bits of the book you like, and what could be better, or travel in a different direction, thus making it better.
  • Ultimately it would be nice to think it would enable me to lose the day job and concentrate fully on writing even more. I'm sure you all know the feeling after working for the man for a full week, you get home and just want to chill. Well, that chill time is my writing time, and it makes for loooong days. I'm under no illusion, I don't really expect this to allow me to give up the day job entirely, but it would be nice to think I might be able to reduce my hours and get down to maybe three days a week working for someone else... Well, it's a beautiful dream.

I am setting this Patreon up as PWYC. Which means, instead of having lots of different tiers where you receive better rewards and content at each tier, everybody gets access to ALL my Patreon material, regardless of whether you pledge $1 or $50 per month.

I don't believe in restricting access to more interesting content just because you can't afford a particular tier of support. To me, you have all chosen to support me and that's wonderful - you should each receive what I have to offer my Patrons - One for all... and all for One.

To everyone who chooses to support me at a higher rate than the initial $1 pledge - thank you for your amazing generosity.

It goes without saying, that you will receive access to the Patreon only feed and updates on how things are going. In addition, here are the types of things I will be producing for you.

  1. Any additional fiction and short stories that I write. I have a load of ideas for many other books and swathes of short stories. And, of course, the continuation of stories in the Fogbound and ArkZeroNine settings.
  2. Extra material not included in the books such as:
    1. Access to first drafts chapters
    2. Beta-reader program
    3. Ability to offer feedback on what you've read
    4. Character backgrounds, initial outlines, early views of artwork
  3. Access to a Q&A thread where we can discuss anything about the whole writing process, the world settings, and anything else you want to talk about.
  4. Story Collaboration - opportunities to help name characters and possibly even to direct the fate of some of the characters. I'd love to be able to give some of you the opportunity to have a level of involvement that offers you a special link to some of the characters in the books. This comes back to my origins in roleplaying and building a collaborative story.
  5. Sneak peaks at cover art options and the blurb planned for the books, and synopses for future book ideas.
  6. Photos and Videos (Do you really want to see my ugly mug moving?) of the processes involved in my writing, as well as progress on the different projects I am working on.
  7. I'll plan to do some Live chat sessions through Google hangouts or something similar. I will need to work out a good time depending on where all you folk are located around the globe. I'll make sure everyone has reasonable notice for "Ask Me Anything" sessions.
  8. I'm toying with many other ideas such as mini podcasts and chapter readings that you could receive as a link from the relevant posts.
So I have plenty of ideas, and hopefully, you will have seen enough here to pique your interest and to make you want to find out more about the books I'm writing.
Check my website for sample pages/chapters here so you can get a feel for my style and the setting to ensure it matches your expectations. There is a little more synopsis of the two books and a link to the first chapter of Fogbound, so go take a read.

Once you have decided that this is for you, just select a level of patronage, from one Dollar up to whatever you chose, and I'll speak to you in more detail about all things Fogbound, ArkZeroNine, and beyond.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and a tremendous thank you in advance for all of you willing to help fund this dream become a reality.

Now stop your lollygagging, it's after curfew, the Black Guard are on their way, and the foghorns are blaring their sad laments. Time to "Become a Patron" and get back to safety before the hordes of tainted begin hunting you through the Fogbound night.
