About Grrrl Zine Fair | Lu Williams

Hey! Thanks for checking out my Patreon. As an independent artist and director, I put all of my energy into Grrrl Zine Fair projects. I run everything from my pocket or through occasional Arts Council grants, so have created a Patreon so that those who love what I do can support my activities as Grrrl Zine Fair, in exchange for exlusive content, goodies each month in the post and previews to my work - before it hits the gram! I'd love for you to join us, just pick which tier suits you financially, and welcome to the zine club :)

I created Grrrl Zine Fair in 2015 to bring together women, transgender and non binary self publishers, artists, musicians and makers through events and zines.
Not just to represent ourselves in arts, culture & the media but because it feels good to come together.

Since then, fairs have grown beyond pub gigs and selling zines to hosting an entire festival in 2019- encompassing a zine fair of 30 artists and writers, bands, performers, workshops and a talks tent co-curated by gal-dem over three stages. This year I also built a permanent community space for the Grrrl Zine Library at The Old Waterworks in Southend-on-sea. I traveled to Beijing with the Grrrl Zine Library, hosted a pop up library at The British Film Institute and created a portable exhibition called Spread (thinking about how zines can disseminate ideas and how marginalised people can take up more space); that toured the UK.
I also was chosen as the Essex Cultural Diversity Projects Basildon Commission, hosting a year long programme of zine workshops in Basildon culminating In a 200 page zine/book documenting voices, artworks and protests in the area.
My collaborative zine Grrrl In Print is in its third issue and is a sometimes serious sometimes tongue in cheek look at DIY, how we can Do It Ourselves and turn our feminism into action 💪

Here’s how my zine workshops help others in proper funders speak:
“Zine workshops through Grrrl are presented as an adaptable way of making outside of academic or capitalist endeavours. Zine making is made accessible to communities outside of the art world and can be used as a way of self expression, a tool, or a practice of self care.”
& it’s true !!! I’ve worked with a lot of people over the last three years and can see the confidence they get from making zines and having their voices heard as well as the process itself of being around others making and making time for themselves is so incredible.

I hop you can join me and keep Grrrl Zine Fair alive and kicking ass.

Love and solidarity,
Lu x

Being able to support myself, host more free zine making workshops and put money into new projects - would be incredible! Taking our amazing zine community off Instagram and into a space where I can provide IRL and downloadable treats to regular subscribers if a goal of mine.
