Hey there!
My name is Erin O'Neil and I have a tendency to do things my mom might consider, "Uncalculated."  Exhibit A: Graduating from college and immediately accepting a $7 an hour job in Asia without signing a contract or learning how to say more than, "Hello," in the native language.  Up until this very moment in life I had always been precautious in making decisions.  I fell into the societal trap of planning out every month of every year until the day I graduated, when, apparently the freedom overtook my reasoning abilities and landed me stranded in China, unemployed, with no more than $2,000 to my name.  Which, is the precise moment in which I took yet another "uncalculated" leap, and started buying train tickets.

You see, I'd moved to Asia under one promise and one promise alone: paid travel and career-building experiences.  I was employed to produce digital media for a company while traveling on the boss's dime to destinations where I would connect with leaders in the industry and further develop my portfolio.  I had planned to return home in preparation for a successful career.  Instead, I ended up fighting for an underwhelming paycheck with little to no guarantee I'd ever leave the country, not to mention the frequent public humiliation and slandering in front of those spectacular individuals of whom I was supposed to be impressing.

So I quit. Yes, that's right, I quit my very first post-graduate job. (Insert the disappointed sigh of every White Picket Fenced American... here.)  But the adventures that would subsequently transpire would reinvent the individual I had so confidently thought I was.  The people I met as I traveled alone through China, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and more, not only guided my journey but also created a more mindful and grounded individual.  I came home having learned valuable lessons in trust, humility, vulnerability, honesty, authenticity, and patience.  Because when a middle-aged man in Penang offers you a tour of the island on the back of his motorbike, you either calculate risk or calculate trust.  I chose trust.

This book is a detailed narrative of the people and the lessons they taught me as I found myself devoid of creature comforts and instead surrounded by the unknown and unpredictable.  It is because of these individuals that I began to develop a refined ability to overcome life's adversities with confidence and gratitude.  Gui Ren is a celebration of the people who influenced this journey.  In this book, readers will not only learn the extraordinary stories of ordinary people but will also gain meaningful insight into what it means to live a purposeful and joyful life.  It's self-help gone rogue as "calculated" quickly becomes a thing of the past and is instead replaced by "trust" and "vulnerability."
