About

Join me on my journey as I tell the rich colorful stories about my world, and that of the Gullah and Creole cultures which are an inspiration to my artwork. I’ll also share short stories, my personal  life adventures (journal excerpts) and videos.  Help me choose new projects, develop products, and share through demonstrations. My focus is primarily on women of color, their visions, daily life, challenges and triumphs.

Artists Biography
Dunham’s art has been recognized internationally as a genuine illustration of the history and traditions of African America southern culture for decades. Her art career began as a small child growing up in Ohio but spending her summers and holidays in the south with her grandparents. Learning all the Folkways her elders could teach her, she was an adept student as she was fascinated by the stories, they told her, and these subjects would later appear in so many of the paintings she was later destined to create. As a young woman she settled in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and here she has spent most of her adult life becoming immersed in the Gullah culture of the Sea Islands. Her paintings are well known because of their brilliant coloring, intricate human and landscape forms and themes that represent community life in South Carolina’s Lowcountry region and the bayous of Louisiana with a strong emphasis on women of color.

A self-taught mixed media artist, historian, writer and instructor, Dunham has received many honors and awards. Diane’s art has been collected and recognized in publications as far away as Greece, and documented in reference materials, films and books on Outsider Art, Gullah Art, and African American Southern culture. The famous philosopher Maria Lugones (in the book “Speaking Face to Face The Visionary Philosophy of Maria Lugones”) referenced Dunham as one of four artists who had the community inside of them. The artist has been a featured speaker and exhibitor at universities and museums such as the University of South Carolina Beaufort, The University of Central Missouri African Studies, Drexel University, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Wilbur Steele Gallery Bennet College Greensboro, NC, The I.P. Stanback Museum Planetarium South Carolina State University, Museum of Anthropology Wake Forest University Winston-Salem, NC., Tales from The Land of Gullah Houston Children’s Museum Houston Texas, The African American Civil War Museum, Washington D.C., Lorenzo Dow Turner Exhibit Anacostia Museum, Washington DC and the York W. Bailey Museum Penn Center Campus St Helena Island, SC., and many more.

A few permanent public acquisitions include the Brunswick Hospital in Brunswick Ga, The Medical University of South Carolina Storm Eye Institute, Charleston SC, Brookgreen Gardens permanent outdoor “Gullah Garden” installation, Myrtle Beach, SC. Commissions include four posters for Gullah Celebration of Hilton Head and designed their very popular logo, also designed posters and marketing material for Penn Center School on St Helena Island, SC. Diane works within the community and is a strong supporter of the arts, she is the Vice Chairperson of the Beaufort Arts Council, serves on the the University South Carolina Beaufort Visual Art & Design Advisory Committee, and the Chairperson of the Gullah African Diaspora Artists group where she is thrilled to be contributing to the future of one of the most progressive art communities in the country. Her love of history and culture is the fuel that keeps her creating as well as helping others in the community discover their own creative p
assions.
