Those of you who are regular listeners to the How Good It Is podcast have heard me say literally dozens of times that the show chooses a song from the 1950s through the 1980s and takes a closer look at the story behind the song and the artist who made it famous. The show has been around for close to three years and seeing both the positive feedback from listeners (and a few other podcasters) and the audience growth that the show has seen, especially over the last few months, has been truly heartwarming. It's taken my love for radio, my passion for teaching people, and my habit of saying almost everything in the form of a story, and combined it all into something pretty wonderful.

I've been happy to work on this project as a labor of love. I've put a bunch of money into equipment to help me make the show sound as good as possible, and I put several hours' worth of work into putting together the 15 minutes of audio you get every week. Once upon a time, in my Radio Days, my ratio was about 60 minutes' work to one minute of audio, so I think I'm getting better at it. 40:1 is better than 60:1, right? RIGHT??

But as the show is growing, the cost of data storage, webhosting, bandwidth and other stuff that's otherwise invisible is going up, and I think it's time to ask for your help before my wife figures out how much I've really spent. (That's a joke of course; she's very supportive, by which I mean she puts up with me taking up an entire room in the house to work on this thing.)

The show isn't nearly big enough to make stickers or T-shirts or other swag a worthwhile investment on my part, and I don't really have the time to create bonus shows at this point (it's already a tight schedule getting the show out regularly) so here's what I'm offering.

For $5 per month I'll add you to an email list that will give you a newsletter. The newsletter will come out at least every week that there's a show, and it'll contain those "This Day in Rock History" pieces I like putting together, some musical musings that pop up and don't really have a place to live, some previews and whatever else I can stick in there. Writing a newsletter for you also keeps me working on the show as a whole. I'll also add your name to a Wall of Thanks on the website (, where it will reside until the End of Time, or the end of your patronage, whichever comes first.

I'll throw in an extra level. For $7 per month you'll get the newsletter, plus I'll teach myself how to do a live video with you guys once per quarter. So we'll do some virtual hanging out where we can just shoot the breeze or do it as a Q&A, however you'd like to see it structured.

And, of course, at both levels there will be bonus posts here, just for you folks! So you'll be assisting me with research materials, and bandwidth, music services and other assorted odds and ends, I'll be putting in lots of extra time and effort to make the How Good It Is experience an even better one for you!
