My name is Devon, and I'm the Humanities M.A., father, and podcaster in Vancouver, BC, who makes Human Circus: Journeys in the Medieval World. It's a narrative history podcast that follows the stories of travellers in a medieval world full of merchants, ambassadors, friars, explorers, crusaders, soldiers and more. It's all about long journeys, and long journeys are better with friends. Thanks for joining me!

Why a podcast? Human Circus came about out of an idea to turn the studies that interested me into something creative and share it with other people. I cannot overemphasize the satisfaction of putting something you've made out into the world and having someone else enjoy it too.

Why medieval? The "Dark Ages," as they're still sometimes called, remain pretty dark to many people, all witch hunts, mutilations, and bad personal hygiene. But no! Actually, it was a fascinating period, full of colour, culture, and adventures that didn't always involve being taken for a witch, mutilated, and ignoring one's own lack of cleanliness.

Why journeys? Medieval humans didn't just live and die in their own village, covered in filth and unaware of a wider world. They travelled! Or some of them did at least. And the ones that did had fantastic adventures which saw them moving between cultures, across continents, and through a diverse and interconnected world. They left from England with gifts for the Ottoman Sultan, and when they got back, they recorded their adventures. They left from Bavaria on a crusade, and, after 30 years, returned to leave a record of where they had been (among the armies of Timur the Conqueror) and what they had done (quite a bit). They went overland from France to witness the elevation of a new Mongol khan, and they made it home to write about what they saw. All of these travel narratives, and there are many more, make for wonderful stories full of interesting encounters and unique perspectives on historical events.

Why Patreon? Between research, writing, recording, and audio editing, I put more time and effort into making Human Circus than I do my paying job. And I'd like to put more into it. This is what your support brings me, whether at $5/month or $1:
  • A warm and happy feeling.
  • A budget for improving my recording equipment.
  • Money for books and other research materials.
  • An easier time getting through the month and a softer landing when the rent is due.
  • More hours to commit to making the podcast I love to make.
  • A better podcast.

Thanks for listening,
-Devon.
