About

Introduction

Is This For Real? Breaking The Blue Wall is a free, season-long project aimed at investigating systemic anti-Black racism and police misconduct in the Edmonton Police Service. We are creating this project due to the emerging mass movement questioning police misconduct around the world.

Edmonton Police are currently on a media offensive attempting to escape criticism and calls for accountability. They are doing this through vague statementsPR videos, and having municipal politicians reactive "anti-racism" committees

There is a danger that they will succeed and that this moment of justice will be co-opted. Due to a lack of knowledge surrounding the Edmonton Police Service and their systemic issues, most Edmontonians are easily manipulated by police and city council talking points.

Unfortunately, Edmontonians have no alternative source for critical analysis into police practices partly due to lack of perspectives in local main stream media.

This project aims to close this knowledge gap and to present real systemic solutions to the Edmonton Police Services miscount and anti-Black racism.

Timeline

We will be producing a 10 episode season with each episode focusing on the issue of policing as it intersects with topics such as schooling, media, and police oversight. Our first episode will be released June 12, 2020.

The pilot episode will provide an introduction to policing in Edmonton. The goal will be to provide context on how our communities are policed. In addition, we will explain how police oversight works in Edmonton.

All subsequent episodes will be released the first Wednesday of each month. With the second episode going live on July 1, 2020.

Host

Oumar Salifou will be the lead host. He grew up in Edmonton and is a local journalist. He has worked for CBC and was editor in chief at The Gateway. Oumar was also a producer at CJSR 88.5FM and worked on the Edmonton history podcast Let's Find Out.

Bashir Mohamed and Avnish Nanda will support the podcast through research, expertise, and guest hosting. Bashir is an Edmonton based writer. Avnish is an Edmonton based lawyer.

Funding Goals

Our initial goal is to reach $500 per month in pledges. This will allow us to create a high quality and well researched accessible resource. All funds will go towards technical and work related costs.

Our stretch goal is $1000 per month in pledges. This will allow us to expand our journalism into other mediums such as blog posts and potentially video.

Note: All funds are collected in American dollars as Patreon does not support Canadian dollars.
Goals
$4,445 of $5,000 per month
This will hopefully allow us to bring Oumar on full time. Being able to dedicate full resources to this project will create higher quality journalism.
