Before we get into it, this Is What Urban exploration is. It is a hobby/sport/profession where people go to derelict places that are disused and unowned. The task is usually thrill seeking and requires a lot of confidence and lack of fear of the dark and high places. Urban exploring is everywhere, whatever city/town you go to there is bound to be an adventure around the corner. There are two types of urban exploring: civil and criminal. Civil is simply walking through the door of a building without forced entry, this means the owner of the land decides what happened, whether to press charges or not. However, crimina is completely different, this involves breaking entry such as smashing a window, also theft of items on property or vandalism such as graffiti; this type is looked down upon in the community. There is a saying in the community "Leave nothing but footprints", this emphasises the idea of vandalism is unwanted.

JDL Urbex consists of two people, I am a photographer and my friend is an exploration and climbing enthusiast. We are both Urban explorers who stick to the rules of Urbex, “take nothing but photos”. Since the end of 2015 we have been Urban Explorers, with almost 3 years’ experience, we have seen improvements in our skill in the hobby and hope to expand from our hometowns Stourbridge and Dudley. Join us on our journey to expand our exploration across the UK and the world.
Imagine a world full of abandonment; a world that is lost within itself. The sight of a static place, where Mother Nature has claimed her land entangling her arms around it. Historic old smells fill your nose like a drug, an escape from the normal boring repetitive life. Somewhere, where the touch of walls is rough to preserve the antique treasure in-caved and locked behind closed doors. Nothing to be heard; just you and the previously lost world. Pure silence. Surroundings engulf. Secluded sadness. The taste of dust dries your mouth; creating an irritating itch in the back of your throat, an itch you know well – curiosity.

Don't you want freedom?
Urban Exploring is a worldwide hobby as there is a huge community surrounding it- don’t believe me? Then have a look yourself on social media; there are thousands of people out there who share their experiences and photography. Although it is often related to trespassing- usually this is not the case, but when it is, it’s known as civil trespassing when no vandalism or theft has taken place; this is taken lightly with a polite “can you leave please”. The nature of this activity presents various risks, including both physical danger and, if done illegally and/or without permission, the possibility of arrest and punishment- this is unlikely if research is done on ownership and previous history.
We are JDL Photography; We wouldn’t call ourselves professional urban explorers as we are not consistent. So, I guess it’s a hobby, we enjoy it; it’s like our static world that is split from real life. The best way I could describe it would be a video game or a horror movie, dark destroyed places. People say that urban exploring or more commonly said Urbex is dangerous, the answer to that is that it is, but it’s only dangerous if you make it dangerous. We know our limits and we wouldn’t take it too far to put ourselves in danger; however, sometimes danger must be passed; this creates a profound sense of adrenaline. It allows me to clear my mind and gives me time to realise that all my problems in life are not important; just an inconvenience.

Urban exploration should not be looked down upon because it’s not a terrible thing. Yes, it may be dangerous, but as before it’s only dangerous when you make it dangerous. When people see it happening, they automatically think that its crime related, which does happen with graffiti and theft, but they are not urban explorers- they are criminals. Urban exploration is great it keeps people out of the house and creates an interest in life other than the growing disease of indoor gaming. Urbex is a chance to do something different, creative and unique; as you can see from the thousands of people who engage in this hobby.
Don’t waste your time, don’t be boring, go urban exploring!
