Who am I?
I’m Jonathan Epp, an aspiring author with a Bachelor’s degree in English with a lot of ideas and very little time between life and work to bring them to life. During a career project in middle school was the first time I thought that I might like to be a novelist some day. Even before middle school, I greatly enjoyed reading and making up stories with my brother Sam. Since that time we have created a grand universe that still captures our imaginations today.
Thus, at the end of High School I decided to attend college and improve my writing skills so I could one day share that universe with others. I worked in fast-food while in college to help pay my way and after college I followed a childhood dream and worked as a Police Officer for a short time.
Right now, I work in corporate America and am refining my first book. I have another book waiting in the wings and plenty of other ideas I can write from.
Why Patreon?
The more I researched what it took to become an author through traditional publishing, the less excited I became. Traditional publishers don’t like new writers who break the confines of their molds or pose too much risk. Not to mention, if I did get published, I would have to take most of the risk while the publisher took most of the rewards.
So, I looked for alternate methods and Patreon was one of them. I’m willing to give it a shot! I’m already writing for free anyway! Actually, scratch that, I’m spending money following my dream and still having fun doing it!
Why?
What am I doing?
Not only do I want to become an author full-time, but I have a bigger plan I am striving for. I have a vision to provide an endless fantasy for entertainment. Such a grand vision can’t be achieved by one man alone. Bringing this about will require the help of others. My mission is to support the creation of a fictional universe by its community. So what will this look like?
Do you know how some creators don’t like people making fan-fiction/art out of their stuff? Well, I’m the opposite. I say go all out! Have fun! Not only do I find it flattering for people to be creative from my ideas, but I want to support it too by creating a market and system where those fan creations can be legally sold. Amazon has something like this called Kindle Worlds for books, so that may be a viable route for this.
Other ideas I have are: offering up story prompts that I have (but don’t have the time to attempt) for community creators, managing potential creations for “canon” status, collaborating with the community for creations and many others.
What do you get?
So, I get closer to my dream of becoming a full-time novelist, what do you get?
Writing exercises I create every month, plus a bonus one if you pledge high enough. This universe is a work-in-progress. One of the best ways to explore it and flush it out is to simply write about it. Just like I’ve been posting in 2017 all year, I’ll be doing writing exercises that you get to read where I explore ideas, characters, and places. These are fun for me, low-stress and you’ll get to see the ideas I’ll be putting into my books very early on.
You get a universe to create in.
When I officially announce an anthology or book is coming out by name, certain tiers will receive the eBook copy of it for free.
Voting on writing exercises.
Videos of me writing.
I’ll answer your questions to the best of my ability.
All social media posts in one place.
Any other reward I see fit to surprise my Patrons with on occasion.
Community. This is a big one for me. Like I said before, I don’t want this to be an individual effort. Comments, suggestions, ideas, reviews, creations, likes, follows, etc., all contribute and I’m overjoyed to see them!
