What is the Millstone Project?
Millstones were invented to grind the hard stuff of life into something usable. We have millstones for grains like wheat and barley, for legumes like split peas, and for pigments from stones. Grinding these things takes time, patients, and effort.
For John Blalock the millstone represents a type of emotion or in this case an emo-chine—meaning a symbolic representation of the machinery it takes to process emotions. These emotions are the “hard stuff” that we have to deal with. They come delivered to our souls by our life circumstances and must be dealt with through the slow process of grinding.
What is “hard stuff”? Loss, sadness, loneliness, heartache, pain, humiliation, jealousy. Emotions that do not simply go away but that must be actively ground up as they come in. If they are ignored they don’t go anywhere, they simply pile up, which just makes hard stuff harder.
John Blalock has been grinding away at a tower of emotional reside much of his life. The largest and toughest of these piles is from the sexual abuse he experienced at the churches he grew up in. What do you do if you are groomed and sexually abused by a clergy member? What do you do if that man is also your photography teacher, and ski instructor, and best friend, who lives in your house?
As a you boy there is simply nothing you can do. It is the job of adults to handle this. If the job is left to you it will take years of grinding to find these answers.
In 2018 after years of grinding away John once again went to the police to see if they would take his case seriously. This time much had changed, john had been grinding away and was much better prepared. The police had been grinding away as well and things were much different. Following the Pennsylvania report that listed over 300 priests and 1000 kids earlier this year law enforcement seems to have taken a new look at the situation.
But he needs your help. Like many clergy sex abuse survivors he is in trouble, financially, mentally, spiritually.
He works every day creating art in 3D software and with 3D scanning. Most recently with this line of 3D printed Millstones based on historic millstone dress patterns.
What does he need?
John has launched this project to help with his own recovery while handling this criminal case and healing and profits above this will go to the national Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests—the foremost organization in battling clergy sex abuse in all churches in the country.
