My name is Jonathan. I’m a guy who, among other things, likes to sing and play the guitar a lot. I also like to teach, learn, think, and play practical jokes on friends and strangers. If you found this page, I’m guessing it’s because you discovered something I made and thought ‘wow, that dude is cool; maybe I want to give him money so he can do more cool stuff.’ That was my goal. I like to make stuff, and money is helpful for that, so I occasionally plant ideas about ‘donating’ in the content I create. If you have already donated either money or a nice comment or a share of one of my videos, my heartfelt thanks! I crush a candybar in your honor! If you want to get to the donating part, use the “Become a Patron” button on this page. If you want more of a breakdown of what my deal is, read on.

What’s The Money For?

Currently, my main focus is on producing video music lessons. I've been working on a 10,000 hour song improvisation project since 2010 and I have learned a lot! My goal is to try to transmit as much of that knowledge as possible through organized and complete video courses. I have already released courses on guitar technique, music theory, improvisation, freestyle rapping and a bunch of other stuff. I would still like to get out advanced levels of those courses plus more on piano, rhythm, songwriting and recording, looping, and a lot of other stuff. The Patreon dollars buy me time to do that. I have most of the equipment I need, though I occasionally upgrade my video workflow. Most of what I need to do is just pay bills so I can afford to devote time to getting ideas out of my head and into video.

What I’ve Accomplished So Far

As of January 1st 2019, my main YouTube Channel had over 1,400,000 views, 12,000 subscribers, and over 6 million minutes of watch time. I’ve focused my releases on what I think of as innovative approaches to teaching and playing the guitar. Seeing the Blues as if it’s a Raga, learning to improvise on a simple song like “Landslide” or “Romanza” for an hour, and how to learn techniques like “Pluck and Chuck” through a series of popular songs, are some examples of ways I’ve done this. While I’ve got ideas like these in spades and I continue to develop my past projects, my recent releases are shifting towards developing a holistic understanding of Music and how we use it.

Patreon has been such a tremendous gift to me in terms of supporting my work, and if you feel you want to support my work and/or participate in my creative process, I encourage you to understand what it is and how you can participate in my community through it.

What Is Patreon?

Patreon is a crowd-sourcing website that helps creators like myself connect with individuals interested in supporting our various projects so that we can keep 'em coming.

My campaign is “per month,” meaning if you decide to make a pledge it will be processed on a monthly basis. To the right you can see the different amounts you can pledge and their relative “rewards” - benefits from me to you for helping support my work. Or, if you're feeling especially altruistic, you can pick a monthly amount of your choosing. Please don't feel compelled to donate unless you're interested in working together to better our understanding of music and the many ways to use it. I don't know how to say it without it sounding like a pitch, but I wasn't kidding when I said this is a deep personal belief and the thing that motivates me most is collaboration for mutual benefit.

Thanks again for checking out my Patreon page – feel free to take a look at some of my existing work, and if you decide to become a patron of mine, at any level - THANK YOU.

I look forward to us both advancing as musicians/artists/educators/human beings together! And one more thing in the context of collaboration - if you like the stuff I'm working on, please check out some of the creators I'm supporting (links to the left).

Thanks again,

- Jon Michael Swift

I'm trying to offer a lot for as little as possible! If you can afford to skip that candy bar this month (and being chosen over a Snickers will do wonders for my self-esteem, hah), you'll enjoy access to the patron feed, which means access to all new content as it's published (including my experience with learning, teaching, sound mixing/design, life as a professional musician, etc.), the community of students/teachers, and a plethora of original/unique ideas on being a better musician.

If you're looking for a little more (or don't particularly enjoy Snickers), this reward includes access to the patron feed as well as patron e-mail Q&A, plus the ability to vote on upcoming projects – great for musicians looking for a little more in-depth information.

Oh, you want to get really serious? How about all of the above plus the ability to make direct requests for content and get quick answers to specific questions – ideal for serious musicians and/or teachers working on their own schedules.

I appreciate any level of support - but if you're finding my work/community particularly useful, at this level I'll provide the preceding rewards plus credit as a Sponsor of a Studio Block - one of the specific projects I'm working on in the given month. In addition to named credit you'll receive a triple vote on upcoming content!
Private Tune-ups
$25 or more per month 2 of 10 patrons
Want to learn guitar/singing?  As a professional teacher and accomplished performer, I'm offering a limited number of affordable private "tune-up" lessons via Skype for as long as I have the time - and if you're reading this, I have the time!  For this generous level of support I'll provide all previous rewards plus one monthly 30 minute session of guitar/vocals instruction - intended for musicians who could benefit from a second set of trained eyes.
Collaborative Learning
$100 or more per month 1 of 6 patrons
Wow - thanks for even considering this!  In return for this huge contribution you will receive all stated rewards (including one monthly tune-up if you'd like!) plus you will officially be one of my 'collaborative students.' I'll make sure we communicate as often as you need about what you are trying to create in your own life, and I'll go the extra mile to help you make your projects happen. My ideal for this tier is to help folks make their own content about what they are learning but...the ball's in your court.

I wish I could offer this to everyone (and that's the idea behind the Collaborative Education I'm developing) - if you've got something specific you want to see, you can directly request and be credited as the Sponsor of a Custom Studio Block - a completely produced video on a song/artist/style of your choosing. If you'd like this to be a one-time thing, we can arrange it through PayPal. Hit me up!

Intensives - Up to one ½ hour lesson every weekday for the month (five days a week).  I'm a strong believer in interesting "creative relationships” - producing new ideas and cultivating a strong original spirit. These sorts of things are where it happens. If you're looking for a deeper creative mentorship that will totally transform your playing, I recommend giving these a try.
Goals
$238 of $500 per month
At $500 of support per month I will be able to provide an additional release once a week. This may be an extra song lesson, a new serial on looping or music theory, a steaming hot serving of original songs...you all can decide when the time comes!
