Most people seek a life of comfort and security -- then try to find some time to make their art. By choice and by necessity, I’ve had to do it differently. As a wanderer with no permanent home and few possessions, I read and write for hours each day, while trying to live as simply and cheaply as I possibly can, mostly in India and Mexico. I’ve kind of made an art of it.

To my delight, it appears that this unlikely life is starting to bear fruit. I was a 2016 Lambda Fellow in Fiction; my story “The Right Way to be Crippled and Naked” is the title story of an anthology of fiction about disability; other stories are popping up in places like Denver Quarterly and QAE. Thanks to the support of Patreon, which has enabled me to have a simple, safe, quiet room of my own, I've at long last been able to create a manuscript of stories, a long essay about running away, and a novella.

By choosing to support my work, you are helping me in the most basic ways: with food, shelter and freedom from fear. I am doing all I can to read and write and look as deeply as I can. I think I’m getting close. Please help me to keep going. Thank you.

Respectfully,
Jonathan

P.S. I assume that most people visiting this page know me either from my travels, from Facebook, or from my blog "Guttersnipe Das". Although I may still share snippets of work on FB or the blog, most of my work will now appear first here at Patreon. The first project I seek to complete is a long essay, "Running Away Cannot Be Praised Enough: A compendium of everything I know about running away", followed by a full, revised version of my peculiar novella "Artifact Panel, or, About the Angel", which I shared at the 2016 Lambda Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Writers. For a more comprehensive description of my work and goals, please click on the post, "What I've Done, What I Do, What I Aim To Do". Questions are very welcome. Just send a message. Thanks again.

Throughout my life it has been my persistent experience that those who have the least are, peculiarly, the most stubbornly and endlessly generous. Bless you! I will do all I can to serve and adore you. This level entitles you to a regular and frequent feed of updates: short excerpts of fictions, essays, and book notes, as I complete them.
Gentle Reader
$3 or more per month
As well as the feed of short excepts and book notes, this level entitles you to an electronic copy of any new work I complete. Your willingness to read is a beautiful gift of attention. Thank you.
Benefactor
$10 or more per month
As well as all previous rewards, this level entitles you to receive an electronic copy of any manuscript or book review that I can access, at your request. Thousands of pages. It's downright spooky. Some of those joining me here have read my work for 20 years or more. Is there something you'd like to see again? Is there work I should revisit? Please request and advise!

Also: although I hope my odd writing will find a small place in the world, it's likely that the very best thing I have to offer is what I've learned from 30 years of obsessive daily reading. At this level, I would be delighted to consult with you to create a personalized reading list of classic and neglected literature from around the world.

Depending on where I live, I survive on between 8 and 25 dollars a day. At this level, you are giving me another dollar each day. In other words, you're changing my life. This tier entitles you to all previous rewards AND straightforward answers to basic questions, to which I have been, throughout my life, notoriously and supremely cagey. For example, you could ask me, "Where are you?" and I might actually tell you.
Confidante / Editor
$50 or more per month (sold out!)
This level is for anyone who would like my help with their own writing. During my life in Tokyo, I worked as an editor and lecturer in literature. (I never worked for less than 50 bucks an hour -- those were the days!) This level entitles you to 3 hours each month of editing work, writing advice, and encouragement -- as well as to the knowledge that you are, single-handedly, drastically improving my day to day life. May all temporal and ultimate happiness be yours!
Keeper of the cards
$100 or more per month
This tier entitles you to all previous benefits, plus I will mail you handwritten originals of my work, the actual cards upon which I labor and obsess. If you've ever been curious, here are the cards themselves. They're yours. I meant it when I wrote: "When die, never mind about my body. Secure the cards."

Could such a thing actually happen? For this amount, I would know that I could eat and work and live without fear in a room of my own. How extraordinary. What a vast and sweet relief.
