About Build Soil

For most of my life, I wanted to know: "what will it take for us to repair the climate, feed people, restore the landscape?" So I spent a decade working in nonprofits devoted to repairing the relationships of people and place. I learned Permaculture, a method of ecological design that allows us to repair the earth while supporting a thriving community. In college, I studied plant ecology and ethnoecology and learned as much as a could about plants and soil. I went to graduate school for sustainable landscape planning and design and geographic information systems to learn the necessary skills.

After 25 years of searching, I am confident that I have found my calling. I now understand the significant role that the release of soil carbon has played in climate change. I believe that we can repair the climate in our lifetimes. A recent IPCC report has said that, in order to keep global temperatures from rising 1.5 degrees, we have to stabilize between passing a 10-year carbon budget, or 420 gigatonnes of CO2.  So, that's the goal and from 2028 on, we will need to work on dropping another 100-150 ppm (depending on how much we rise on the way to 2028.)

I'm researching, writing, and designing landscapes. In the long run, I believe we must grow a worker-owned, climate- repairing development project that will employ and empower people to fix the climate. I have a plan for how it can work and I feel confident that, once launched, it can be a powerful force for change.

My main projects right now are:
  1. Regular soil discussions on Twitter.
  2. Short articles on important soil carbon and design topics.
  3. Documentation and case-studies to inform action and design.
  4. A book on how regions can address climate change through soil.
  5. Designs of yards, neighborhoods, cities, regions, and broad landscapes for mitigation and repair of the climate.

I am currently putting as much time as I can to get this project running. Some health complications and a surgery, as well as the struggle to stay on my feet while making something new happen is challenging.

By helping me on Patreon, you are helping me reclaim my attention from a period of worrying about finances and my own well-being, to directing it more fully on working through the ideas, writing, presentation, and storytelling needed to get this work growing.

The support I receive will buy back my time so that i can make regular blog posts and videos, share documentation of the projects that prove what's possible, build presentations and workshops, and craft the build model I need to show investors how to give in ways that reverse climate change.

Thank you so much in advance for your support.

Goals
$466.29 of $500 per month
Currently, I work odd jobs and spend a lot of time doing work that doesn't contribute to my project. The project will take a lot of different kinds of work and $500 will secure 2-3 days week to be fully devoted to the research, writing, and production parts of my project. These including write-ups of theory, case studies, GIS analysis, and landscape designs. These are stand-alone projects but they give me the source material that i will draw on for building the project.
