Hello, friend! I'm Josh Closs, here to make your day better. I draw comics, I write stories, and I sometimes tell you that I think your hair is great. (In case I haven't said it lately, though, it looks fantastic today. Dang.)

I tell stories that champion hope, acceptance, and friendship, because I think we need more of those things in our world.

I'm on Patreon because I want to write all of the stories and draw all of the comics that I have pent up inside me, and that process takes time and energy. You can read in my goals what exactly your money is going towards! I promise you that every dollar you pay me is cherished, and I'll work hard to make sure it goes to good use!

Active projects include:

My weekly coming-of-age comic, Don't Worry About Their Classes, about friendship, romance, and balancing the various opportunities that come with entering adulthood. And now there's magical superpowers, too! It's a lot of fun, I promise

My twice-weekly fantasy comic
,
The Guildmistress, about the best worst leader of Briarburgh's Mages' Guild ever. I love four-panel comics, and this is the best way I know to tell this story. It gets grimmer than DWATC at times, but still filled with hope and friendship! I have the ending planned, but it's gonna take us a few years to get there, and I need your help to reach it!

I'll also post whatever prose fiction I write, and maybe a few in-progress works to get some feedback. Writing is tricky to schedule, but I promise I'm working on it!
Completed projects include(s):

Souls Incorporated, a novel that rejects a pithy description. If you need a modern-fantasy dimension-hopping magic-filled story where good defeats evil, love is real, and breakfast foods are championed, you should definitely read it! (And you can, right now! For free!)

A bunch of short stories that you can read by checking out the "Short Stories" tag on my posts!

----

To make all these stories
and all of the other ones rattling around in my noggin, I need your help! In addition to the financial assistance, your patronage tells the world that you want to hear more stories like the ones I'm telling. That's a powerful message, friend! Plus, it means I get to call myself a Professional Webcomic Creator and Author, which fills me with so much delight and joy that words on a screen can't express it. You can give me that joy! Just with money! What a deal!!

If you trust me with a buck or more every month, that's awesome! And so are you. Words can't express my gratitude. If not, that's/you're awesome too! However, it does mean you won't get all of the neato rewards you get with the patronage. I'm here to give you the chance to be a part of the excitement, no matter which patron reward tier you pick! I can't promise that the comics will always be good, or that I won't make dumb mistakes, but I can promise that I'll always give it my all, and that I'm working hard every day to get better.

If you have any questions, the best way to reach me is through Twitter or email! Thanks for reading all of these words, friend!! I hope you have a super-fantastic day!

HAQ (Hypothetically Asked Questions):

Q: Who are you?
A: Hi! I'm Josh Closs. I teach college-level math at the local community college, and make comics and other stories! Neither of those is sufficiently paying the bills right now, so I'm here on Patreon to help me live as a human in the 21st century. Wow, isn't American Capitalism great??

I try to be a light in the middle of darkness, because we have a lot of darkness right now and not much light. As such, I try to promote hope and joy to everyone in the world! If you want to help do that, I invite you to join in the fun!

Q: How do the character portrait/comic page rewards work?
A: Short answer: A Google Form, that you'll get when you pledge at those levels!

Long answer: Character portraits are one full-body character or two busts with optional speech bubbles. If the characters are mine, that's super-easy; you'll give a description of how you want them drawn and I'll get to work. If they're established characters or a person, you'll send me some reference images in case, describe how you want them drawn, and I'll get to work. If they're a new character (D&D character portrait, maybe?), you'll give me as thorough a description as you can, I'll send you a sketch to approve/disapprove. Once we're on the same page, I'll draw that good good character for you!

For comic pages, you can either give me a general topic (Liz and Ambra), a more specific plot (Liz and Ambra meet for coffee), or a script (PANEL 1: LIZ: Hi! I like your ears!). I'll pencil a layout for your approval; once we're on the same page, I'll get to work on making it magical, and then email it to you when it's done!

I'll aim to get all commissions returned the same month. I'm as impatient for you to get your super-rad art as you are!

Q: I can't afford a monthly patronage at the level it would take to get a portrait/comic page, but I'd love to commission one! What should I do?
A: Through this form! Rates will be comparable to a month of patronage, though a bit lower since you're not getting the other rewards. Patrons get first dibs on commissions, but if I have the time, I'd love to take on yours!

Q: Are there restrictions on what I can commission?
A: As a matter of fact, yes!
-No hate speech
-No nudity (Nothing inherently wrong with it! Just not my jam to draw it)
-No excessive violence
-No Ginny wearing a Cubs hat (You cannot pay me enough money to draw this. Try me, if you dare. I will not bend)

Q: I'd rather not get the physical rewards. What should I do?
A: Putting your name as "NO THANK YOU" (or something along those lines) as your shipping address should do the trick! If Patreon doesn't let you do that, shoot me an email and I'll figure out something else!

Q: What will the Special Thanks look like?
A: Every 24 pages, Don't Worry About Their Classes starts a new chapter; the Special Thanks will go in the chapter title box (after a bit of reconfiguring). For The Guildmistress, chapter breaks will come at less regular intervals, but will serve include "The Story So Far" recaps between chapters for those that don't want to go back and re-read the previous chapters when they forget where Character X came from or when Event Y happened. The Special Thanks will be included on those pages!

And trust me, the thanks won't be subtle. I love thanking people for helping me!

Q: Where does my money go?
A: Helping me live.

Right now, I'm living with my parents, working as an adjunct math professor at the local community college. Without an additional source of income (READ: y'all), I'm not earning enough cash to get my own place and still eat, so I need your support in as big a quantity as you can provide to help me make the best art possible!

Patreon, unlike a Kickstarter or a Kickstarterlike, is about supporting an artist/group of artists rather than a project. Art takes time; between scripting, layouts, inks, colors, and uploading, a page of The Guildmistress takes about five hours, and a page of DWATC takes six to eight hours, depending on the complexity. That means I'm putting in about 20 hours a week just on the regularly-scheduled comics, not to mention my writing schedule, monthly comics, and other drawing projects I'm working on!

Furthermore, time is money, and thus art takes money. If you think mine is worth it, you should know that your patronage funds at least 12 pages of public comics per month, along with a patron-only comic and a nontrivial amount of prose! That's pretty rad.

Lastly, I have a list as long as my arm of cool projects that involve me paying other cool people to bring them to fruition. As this community grows, so will my ability to do said projects. It's up to y'all to make it happen!

Q: Will you name a character in one of your comics after me/give me a cameo/do another favor for me in DWATC/The Guildmistress?
A: Probably not, friend! For various reasons, I like to keep as much control over my comics as possible; introducing real people to those universes make me super-nervous that I'll accidentally make you out to be a jerk/misspell your name/draw your nose all wrong.

If you really want your name in the comics, there's room for you in the Special Thanks! Or you can commission your own comic pages with you in the comics! So many options!
