Hello dear future Patron!
We are Kape Illustration, a team of two young illustrators, Eve and Andrei, who make comic books in their spare time. Currently we are working on 2 projects. The first one is a comic book called "Lit Birds" and is inspired from the song with the same name by a well known Romanian Metal/Hardcore/Progressive/Rock band, Implant Pentru Refuz. All the pages are carefully hand drawn and inked on 300 gr A3 Canson paper, scanned, and digitally colored. The second project is a graphic novel called "Suferar". It will have 3 volumes, but there may be more. Compared with "Lit Birds", "Suferar" is integrally hand drawn, inked and painted on 300 gr A3 paper. Bellow you can read more about each project.
The comic book, is made to illustrate in a personal way the mood that both the melody and the lyrics inspire. Besides the making of the comic book, the main purpose of the story is to help create one of the band’s future animated music video (the animation will be made together with Electronic Resistance) The story behind “Lit Birds” begins with a small desolated city, floating somewhere in the vastness of the galaxy. The town’s inhabitants have been imprisoned by a group of hateful beings known as “Specters”. Their numbers grow with each victim they devour or turn into their kind, a soulless and faceless creature blinded forever by the bird cage they carry on their heads. Deep in the non-material dimension, chained to an artificial prison sun, a grieving lit bird dreams of the moment of its liberation. Outside of its world, located at the bottom of the floating city, an old man has had enough of the Specters’ reign and calls for “Lit Birds” to put a stop to them.

The magnificent city, Ziluvitha has not been the same ever since it survived a star collision. Particles of the star known as Suferar have spread everywhere throughout the town and have contaminated its inhabitants. Ever since then, the daylight has fallen into a deep sleep, as did many of the residents. Others are struggling and hoping for the Bronze Days to reappear. The collision has also caused the city to split into many sectors and has given birth to strange, yet curious sponge beings who have multiplied exponentially. They have been drying the ocean and the city canals where they have been seeking refuge. On their way towards Zilluvitha, Phoebe and Sprinkler, two adventurers, stumble upon the sponge folk in the most critical time of their lives. Being threatened by extinction because of constant attacks from the rat armies, the sponge folk are helped by our two adventurers in their great battle for survival.
Having a strong connection with the Suferar stars and Suferar particles spread everywhere throughout the town, Phoebe always finds it easy to relate with all the contaminated inhabitants of Ziluvitah. She is the most agile character from the story. By using her speed and quick reflexes, she manages to avoid fighting and uses an opponent’s rage against themselves. Before she met Sprinkler, Phoebe suffered a memory loss. Ever since then, she’s been looking for clues in hoping to trace back her past. Together with Sprinkler, they form a so called superhero team. What initially started as a child’s play, grew into something very serious as they advanced through random tasks. In the end, they find themselves cough up in a middle of a war between the sponge folk and the vast rat armies.
Unlike the other sponges from the circus, Sprinkler never had the abilities to quickly regenerate and multiply. Born in a sophisticated labyrinth, together with many other newly born sponges, he is the only one to survive all the trials from his batch. As a result from all the tests, in Sprinkler’s mind, the world is structured as a continuous labyrinth in which we are all test subjects, passing from one room to another. This kind of thinking will later help him survive certain perils which he has to face alone. While the circus is under attack by rats, Sprinkler makes his escape. He then finds Phoebe and decides to bond with her, being able to regenerate every time she is near. Although the character lacks his racial abilities, he makes up for them in size, strength, patience and understanding.
This masked stranger who goes by the name of “Outsider” is a shape shifter with no face. Not much is known about him, except the fact that he sticks around Phoebe and Sprinkler, helping them in any possible way. His metamorphosis is either another character with whom he interacts or some unique creature from his imagination. The transformations are consuming him, making him weaker as he shifts from on transformation to another.
Her body contains a great concentration of Suferar particles and Suferar stardust, causing her skin to glow and giving her the ability to warm up the air around her. Having maternal instincts, she dedicates her life to protecting all the stray children and innocent souls from the rat invasion. She does this by occasionally heating up the area around her and to great distance, causing approaching rats to burn alive. At one point she becomes the leader and guardian of a group of children that built a base on one of the town’s sectors, very close to the rat territory.
The next images presented are final spreads from the graphic novel. Each page is made on a hard A3 paper. They are hand colored with acrylics and shaded with black ballpoint pen.
Kidnapped, tortured and mutilated by rats, Jim starts becoming one of them.He fights among them and gets to manipulate a small group of rats to help him overthrow a rat general and capture a few bases. Highly appreciated for his brutality, determination and higher goals for the rat colony, Jim is recognized as an important voice among the rat leaders. Being the most qualified, Jim is assigned to lead the attack on the sponge folk sectors of Zilluvitah.
