What I do:
I'm Kate and I'm a writer and podcast host who is dedicated to opening up spaces online (and offline) for people to feel seen, to feel heard and to explore.

I currently host 'Conversations From Our Days', a podcast that seeks to make visible those moments that shape and define us. In each fortnightly episode, I feature conversations with special guests that reflect on their passions, motivations and identity. On the blog, on Medium and here on Patreon, I try to tether these elements together, either writing about my own experiences, or hosting other voices that deserve to be heard too.

How I got here:
From a young age, I've always loved storytelling. When I accidentally created a popular blog and podcast (known as A Playful Day), I started to really listen to this long held dream. I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to share stories.

It struck me though, that I didn't feel like I belonged in that world. I never had much growing up and I relied on benefits as a single parent despite my online success. I also really struggled to navigate how to talk about my sexuality in a way that felt acceptable online. Once I made this connection in my head, I realised I wasn't doing much to make that space for myself or others who also felt underrepresented either. Things had to change. I committed to creating the kind of content that was as inclusive as I knew how and if I didn't know? To figure it out visibly in a way that others might learn how to prevent gatekeeping too.

Everything I now share online is the direct result of this learning journey in which I wrote myself into being the most comfortable version of me I can be. I want everyone to enjoy that feeling so I'm creating resources to help us get there and Patreon helps me fund that. (Spoiler: you can be awkward and a work in progress and still be the best version of yourself. You're going to be fine here, ok?)

How things currently work:
I (Kate) currently host podcasts, live broadcasts, blog posts, essays and social media conversations all over the internet. I create a podcast with the help of my producer who cleans up audio and a transcriber who keeps things accessible for all. I juggle this around freelance work as a writer and photographer.

I use a combination of Patreon and donations to fund the time and resources that it takes to make all of this happen. From an early stage, I chose not to use heavy advertising on the podcast, the blog or on any social media. For me, I found it interfered with the spaces I was setting up as places to let your guard down and learn from each other. So, I chose to make things advertisement free.

How I'd like things to work:
I am committed to making all that become a safe and accessible space for all of us who want somewhere to gather and figure things out together.

I also want to self publish a regular body of work. I've started this journey by committing to self publish a Collection of Essays with original photography in December 2018. I hope to pursue other publishing options and self publish regularly and in doing so, maintain my commitment to raising visibility for marginalised communities and topics of conversation. Until I can afford to pay myself and cover all costs, I can't build that dream.

A Tiered System:
As someone who relied on benefits for years, I understand how difficult it can be to commit financially to additional costs each month. With this in mind I've created a pledge system that reflects my inclusive philosophy: all of us can contribute at a level we know we can manage right now.

If you're able to contribute more, you can pay directly for a service each month that keeps everything viable and open for all. If that extra cost makes a big difference to your budgets however? There's options starting from as little as the price of chocolate bar each month.

For those unable to pledge but wishing to make a one off donation- I have an option for that too. (http://ko-fi.com/kateosullivan).

All those contributing in 2018 will also receive a digital collection of these essays.

What I will use the money for:
Right now, I'd like to meet a goal of $1400 per month. Meeting the current goal would insure the fortnightly podcast is a readily accessible option for as many people as possible. It would mean that everyone who is involved in that process is paid as they should be.

I pay everyone else before I pay myself. This is a bottom line for me- pay contributors and collaborators for their time. Achieving this goal would mean I also get paid for my time to produce, write and host spaces online for you to have conversations you are motivated by.

A Playful Day Monthly Costs:
  • Hosting fees- These get particularly costly when a surge of new people find the pdocast and blog. This is good news but it often means more fees! I'd like a more robust set up that covers these fun new followings.
  • Producer- Patrick is my sound wizard and keeps the podcast sounding crisp. I'd like to pay Patrick the fee he deserves and I'm almost certain that Patrick would like me to pay him the fee he deserves too!
  • Transcription- This has been a regular request since I began the podcast and I've now employed magical Penny to do this to ensure access for every person who wants to access the conversations we are having on the podcast.
  • Software & licensing
  • Mailchimp & Social Media- Numbers matter when you have a Patreon audience helping you reach these goes and keeping them informed, managing lists and occasional promotions makes it easier to get everyone aware of what's going on. I'd like to plan it in so that any growth doesn't cause sudden costs.
  • My time- I'd like to make this a day job and pay myself for the time it takes to research, interview, compile and promote. Paying bills is a pretty good start to sustainable growth.
That's the basics. With these all covered, the podcast and writing that I produce can support themselves and keep going for a long time.

Thank you to each of you who pledge to keep things accessible for all of our community and make every person feel seen as we explore different perspectives in life. It means so much to know we are building this together.

Goals
73% complete
Achieving this goal would mean being able to move all of this work out of evenings and spaces in between work and into my working day. It would mean I can commit to self publishing a body of work as well as continuing all we've built so far.

This would completely pay for travel to events and all the hosting costs for the podcast and blog as well as the team of freelancers who help make it all come together. This would mean from this point on that I am being paid for my writing time that I put into the podcast, blog posts, medium posts and event prep.
