Help this historian tackle issues of inequality and poverty in America! Your support helps me educate others through video interviews and essays.

I work as a historian (Ph.D.) and writer in Atlanta, Georgia. My award-winning first book, Masterless Men: Poor Whites and Slavery in the Antebellum South, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2017. I am also co-editor, with Matthew Hild, of Reconsidering Southern Labor History: Race, Class, and Power (University Press of Florida, 2018), and I write shorter pieces for publications like the Washington Post, Bill Moyers and Company, Aeon, and Smithsonian Magazine.

In addition to Merrittocracy, I am currently writing for the public, working on a book, an amicus brief, and a (top-secret!) documentary.

Thank you for your interest and patronage!
