About Kiya Heartwood

Kiya Heartwood is an award winning, American, roots rock and folk singer-songwriter who recently returned from touring with her band, Kiya Heartwood and Tejas in Ireland and the UK. Kiya is also the Artistic Director of the People's Orchestra of Austin and the National Women's Music Festival Folk Orchestra. She composes songs, choir and orchestra pieces as well as performance art worship services.Kiya also writes poetry, sermons and musicals. The UK's Broadway Baby describes Kiya Heartwood (Stealin Horses, Wishing Chair) as "an award-winning American singer-songwriter who writes smart, funny and poignant songs about the famous and not-so-famous legends of America." Kiya's music "serves up a lively batch of original songs that follow on to two of the oldest traditions of folk music: storytelling and political broadside." Kiya's latest CD, Palo Duro is now available. Kiya makes her happy home in Austin, TX with her wife, Rev. Meg Barnhouse

As a lifetime touring artist and activist, Kiya knows that the music is constantly shifting away from the standard touring model. The challenges of staying healthy and happy in a climate of high travel expenses, free downloads and closing venues require new paths and outreach. Thriving artists who can make a basic living can focus on making better art. More community oriented, online, LBGT and feminist oriented projects will wither on the vine without a group of far seeing supporters who want to back this work. Patreon offers a new way to build strong community between artists and patrons where both can mutually benefit.
