Hi there! I'm Pittsburgh's resident lightfighter, raising visibility for progressive issues using hand-made lighted signs.

Since starting to make and protest with LED signs in spring 2016, I've traveled over 6500 miles, logged hundreds of hours, and spent far more than I ever would have believed I would if you told me this time last year.  In the past year, I've slept in six different cities, made dozens of friends, and stood up to be counted with my fist in the air as tens of thousands of cars drove under me and the five or six dozen other activists I had the pleasure of working with in my travels.

Check out these photos from an awesome event I helped organize in the Bay Area

However, my fight has only just begun.  Moving beyond the presidential primary race and the 2016 election in general, I want to continue to #FightWithLight for progressive causes such as ending foreign imperialism, ending our dependence on fossil fuels, getting money out of politics, and raising the minimum wage.  I want to stand with those speaking out about injustices committed by corporations, governments, and the billionaire class against the world's people, animals, and natural resources.  And perhaps most importantly, I want to use my privilege to amplify the voices of people whose struggles are ignored or unseen.

So, I've founded the Pittsburgh Peace Lights, a new activist organization created to fight for issues that resonate with Pittsburgh progressives.  We are reaching out to political and activist groups in and around Pittsburgh, and using the programmable banner I designed and software I'm currently developing, we can program messages to promote causes using our lights in real time.  There are some incredibly interesting ways we can extend this project, and I really see it as a powerful vehicle for fostering a politically aware and caring public, but to get there, I need your help.

I have so much enthusiasm to devote to progressive activism, but I have reached the end of my financial rope as a PhD student.  As someone already burdened by tens of thousands of dollars in student debt, fighting in this way is unsustainable.  Ignoring the hundreds of hours I have spent designing, coding, assembling, and protesting with the lights, the costs of this project have long surpassed what I can shoulder.  The bill of materials for the project alone has exceeded $1100 to date, and the travel costs associated with taking the brigade to California and Philadelphia this summer have turned an expensive hobby into a sinkhole to an early bankruptcy.

I want to continue to expand the capabilities of the Pittsburgh Peace Lights and hold frequent light brigade events, but it's impossible to justify continued expenses when I've already reached far beyond what I can cover on my stipend and my rust-bucket car continues to require costly repairs.  By pledging to help me and the Pittsburgh Peace Lights, your patronage will not only help to keep the Peace Lights shining in Pittsburgh but also my own lights at home.

In solidarity,
Keith Maki
