After 20 years of collecting information, field sketches, and research, I published my book on the historical ecology of California, A State of Change: Forgotten Landscapes of California (Heyday: 2010). I wrote and illustrated a children's book on paleontology called The Bay Area Through Time (Heyday: 2013).

I have ideas for many more books, but publishing can take time and work--here is where you can help me to further these book ideas:

  • Ice Age California--Herds of mammoths, giant ground sloths, horses, bison, with teratorns flying overhead. All in the Golden State prior to 10,000 years ago. Help me illustrate and write this book.
  • The Mesophyticum--The world of dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and other Mesozoic life, focusing on the plants, ecological communities, and landscapes of the Dinosaur Age. We can imagine the world the dinosaurs inhabited in a much more accurate way, and in finer detail than ever before.
  • Volume 2 of A State of Change: Forgotten Landscapes of California--Perhaps several smaller books on the chapters that were edited out of the original book I published with Heyday in 2010: wolves, condors, bighorn sheep and more in the Mojave Desert, Sierra Nevada and wildfire history and ecology, Owens Valley, and venturing into the Great Basin of Nevada! I am studying the ecology of the Great Basin sagebrush-steppe in depth currently, so this may be a good smaller book soon.
  • Guide to Oil Painting Landscapes and Nature--Because I favor oil painting as the best medium to recreate scenes, I have developed an extensive library of methods and techniques of oil painting, as well as a nearly-completed manuscript waiting to be published. From plein air studies and quick outdoor oil sketches to study color, light, and shadow, to detailed finished studio paintings, this book can help illustrators and artists unlock the great flexibility and beauty of oil painting.

I have piles of illustrations, sketches, notebooks, journals, and research for all these future books in my studio, just waiting to finish and put together into manuscript form.

With Patreon you can access these behind-the scenes illustrations and artwork--all never before published or placed on my other online content. I will show you content that has not been seen before, and give you a tour of my creative process for imagining the past.

My Paleoart and Illustrator Background

I have a bachelor's of science degree in Paleontology from the University of California, Berkeley (1990), where I specialized in studying paleobotany, Mesozoic life, Tertiary mammals, and the Pleistocene. I also studied at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, where I was highly influenced by Joseph Grinnell's natural history observation methods. Observing life today heavily informs my reconstructions of past landscapes and faunas.

After this I attended a graduate program in Science Communication at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where I studied Natural Science Illustration.

Wanting to get out into the field to further study natural systems and communities, I went into the field of wildlife biology for several years, where I worked with such species as desert tortoise, Panamint alligator lizard, tule elk, Owens pupfish, foothill and mountain yellow-legged frogs, and many other species. I worked in areas such as Death Valley National park, the Owens Valley, Yosemite National park, Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park, and the Mojave Desert. All this informs my paleoart and prehistoric reconstructions.

I have done numerous illustrations for books, scientific papers, museum displays, murals, interpretive signs, and magazines. Take a look at some of the publications with my illustrations:
