Welcome! I'm Laura Purdie Salas, and I'm a children's writer and poet. I've written more than 130 books for kids, and some of them have received nice honors and awards. In addition to writing, I love to teach, support, and inspire other writers. I've blogged for writers on one platform or another since 2007. (Wow.) Right now, I give free information and support to writers in four different formats:

A Writer Can Be..., my monthly e-letter
Writing for Children Facebook Group
My weekly audio clips on life as a children's writer
The area of my website for children's writers

I love supporting other writers and being part of the kidlit community, and I deeply love creating books for kids. But I'm a working writer who struggles to make a livable income through my books and school visits. I share openly about my career, even posting my annual income breakdown, which is one of my most popular annual features.

I get so many email requests for answers to individual questions. "What do you do at a bookstore signing?" "Is this a good clause to have in my contract?" "How did you come up with this idea?" I answer the questions the best I can, but I can't keep up. I've also created courses to answer many common questions, but I've priced them so inexpensively that I can't take the time to make more.

So, I'm trying a new approach. I'm going to keep up what I'm already doing. But I'm finally trying out Patreon to build a more close-knit relationship with writers who like the kind of information I share and my style of presenting it (honest, practical, and personal). Writers want to support me and say thanks for the info I’ve offered up regularly over the years. Writers who want to make sure they don't miss anything important. Writers who want to be able to ask me questions. Writers who might not be able to afford an expensive course or an hourly consulting fee, but who can offer a few bucks a month in order to enable me to keep creating material.

Your support would help to free up several hours per month to work on creating information for children's writers to share on my website and the other platforms above. It would allow me to decline a few hours' worth of work-for-hire writing each month. Those are the projects written strictly for money. Your support would buy me that time to share information with and support other writers, like you. And I'll be writing a weekly blog post (often focusing more on the heart of children's writing than on the hustle of the writing life) JUST for Patreon supporters.

I've never been good at asking for help, so this is really difficult for me! But I'm trying to embrace this process in order to continue to offer resources for you. Thank you so much for considering becoming a supporter!
