About

Hello! I'm Lauren James, the author of The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, The Quiet at the End of the World and The Next Together series, as well as the dyslexia-friendly novella The Starlight Watchmaker.

I'm currently releasing a serialised novel called An Unauthorised Fan Treatise. I'm a big fan of online storytelling in fandom spaces, so I decided to create a thriller set on the internet.

Chapters are released each Monday completely for free from now until May 2020 at http://gottiewrites.wordpress.com It's a standalone, complete story that can be read without any knowledge of my other books.

I work as a full-time writer and creative writing tutor, so your support is absolutely essential to allow me to create work like this. Without readers supporting me financially, I don't have the time and freedom to invest in speculative projects like this.

This book doesn't yet have a publication deal, but my publishers are keen to work on the project if it does well online. By showing your support, you are making it more likely that a physical paperback copy will be published. Every patron sends a clear message to my publishers that this kind of internet-focused content is desperately desired by readers of contemporary fiction.

With your support, I will be able to make this novel as exciting and comprehensive as possible, documenting every step of the journey with blog posts and deleted scenes.

Depending on your level of support (see the Tiers section) you can receive different rewards in return. These include early access to the upcoming chapters before the general public, signed swag, and the chance for a cameo in the story. A very few people can even receive bi-monthly editorial critiques from me.

Thank you for helping me make this project a reality - it's been a dream of mine for a long time to release a book in the fashion of Charles Dickens, week by week, followed by readers old and new. I hope that Gottie's story will help us all through the long winter, with a weekly dose of fangirl shenanigans.

More about me:
Lauren James was born in 1992, and has a Masters degree from the University of Nottingham, UK, where she studied Chemistry and Physics. She is the twice Carnegie-nominated British Young Adult author of The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, The Quiet at the End of the World and The Next Together series, as well as the dyslexia-friendly novella The Starlight Watchmaker and serialised online novel An Unauthorised Fan Treatise. Her upcoming release is The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker.
She started writing during secondary school English classes, because she couldn’t stop thinking about a couple who kept falling in love throughout history. She sold the rights to the novel when she was 21, whilst she was still at university.
Her books have sold over fifty thousand copies in the UK alone, and been translated into five languages worldwide. Her writing has been described as ‘gripping romantic sci-fi’ by the Wall Street Journal and ‘a strange, witty, compulsively unpredictable read which blows most of its new YA-suspense brethren out of the water’ by Entertainment Weekly. The Last Beginning was named one of the best LGBT-inclusive works for young adults by the Independent.
Lauren is a passionate advocate of STEM further education, and all of her books feature female scientists in prominent roles. The Loneliest Girl in the Universe was inspired by a Physics calculation she was assigned at university. The Quiet at the End of the World considers the legacy and evolution of the human race into the far future.
Lauren lives in the West Midlands and is an Arts Council grant recipient. She has written articles for numerous publications, including theGuardian,Buzzfeed,Den of Geek, The Toast, and theChildren’s Writers and Artist’s Yearbook 2020.She teaches creative writing for Coventry University, WriteMentor, and Writing West Midlands, providing creative writing courses to children through the Spark Young Writers programme.
