About

The better you understand your tools, the better artist you will be.

That’s particularly true with modular synthesizers. Although they are incredibly powerful and flexible, they can also be less than intuitive. And nothing breaks the creative flow like fighting with your tools.

I’d like to help you with that. I started using modular synths as a teen in the 70s, and have since gone on to design electronic music devices, write about them in magazines, create four online courses on how to use them, and co-author the new modular synthesis book Patch & Tweak (click here for more details). I’ve also had a lot of experience distilling complex technical subjects down into useful information for artists.

This Patreon page is where I write deep-dive posts that accompany every video I release, explore advanced patching techniques, and share technical tidbits as well as abstract musings about approaches to modular synthesis. It’s also where I discuss my personal explorations – from choosing modules for my studio or live performance cases, to how I compose, record, improvise, and play modular music live. Explore the index of posts to get an idea of what I write about. Then check out the different Tiers of support, most of which include access to one or more of my online courses.

The more you learn, the more the technical barriers will fade away, allowing you to get back to creating sounds and making music. Several module creators even support this channel, learning more about modular synth history as well as the way their users work.

I look forward to you joining me on this wonderful journey.
