We, the modern people have access to so much on the internet. All the knowledge of human history in our hands literally at our finger tips. Two hundred thousand years of culture and information in your phone and here you are reading this...

WHAT IS THIS PROJECT?
I wasting time reading comics for free on the internet. There is an enormous back log of comics from the 'Golden Age' available that are now in the public domain and can be legally read online for free.

So I was working my way through a bunch of those when I stumbled across the name 'Lev Gleason'. This stood out to me for no reason other than that my surname is the same as his. The name just stood off the page.

And I started reading them... wow.

Reading them from the perspective of a modern person was a truly strange experience. I found myself getting these hits of nostalgia for the art style of the period, the way that the inking would leak slightly on the low quality paper. Then you get these gut punches of racist caricaturing or misogynistic behaviour. It was a surreal experience.

I decided that I wanted to reboot the Lev Gleason universe but examine it as a cultural artefact.
This is done in two ways.

The first is a retelling of these classic golden age stories by removing all the text from the speech bubbles and captions and replacing them with new original text. The artwork remains - mostly- intact and unedited but now the story is viewed through a hopefully comedic metatextual lens doing like a weird sort of parody / satire thing.

The second is a through a series of 'between the scenes', background commentary, 'Springers Final Thoughts' type think pieces between the stories; giving real historical context and doing a kinda pseudo intellectual social commentary and analysis of the culture of the time thing. Kinda like an amuse-bouch for racism. (You'll understand what that means if you've read an Issue already!)

Golden Age Comic books recontextualised for a modern audience. A pseudo intellectual meta interpretation of the culture and context of these amazing tales.
