Hello!

There's a moment in RETURN OF THE KING by JRR Tolkien where the hero, Frodo, turns to his friend as they sit on a war-ravaged plain and he asks, "How did we come to be here?" How did two quiet, country boys wind up in the middle of the greatest war? It was an echo of Tolkien's memories, but it's an equally appropriate question for you and I as we sit here across the screen from one another. How did we get here?

I'm a writer. Not because I had a daring dream at age nine to write The Great American novel, but because I was one of those quiet kids with an unruly mind scribbling snippets of stories on the back of my homework. I went to school for a degree in marine biology, but my life took a turn that led me to needing to be home full time to care for my daughter who had learning disabilities. Writing was first an escape, and then it became a way to pay for food and rent.

Writing became a secret door I could open to let other people escape from the stresses, fears, and sorrows of their lives.

You're probably already familiar with my writing. Perhaps you started with Seventy, the first short story I ever sold. Maybe you jumped into the continuum with The Day Before, the first novel I sold and my first piece of time travel fiction. Or maybe you read my latest piece and decided I was a good fit for you. Whatever brought you here - THANK YOU

Thank you for coming this far.

Originally I started Patreon with the plan of finishing a series that was orphaned after a small press closed several years ago. I experimented with a serial novel on my blog in 2017 with BODIES IN MOTION, and I wanted to see if I could adapt that to Patreon. And I did with THE POLAR TERROR.

About 100 people logged in every time a new chapter of was posted on my blog. There are over 3000 people who follow me on Twitter. The newsletter goes out to about 2000 people. On Tumblr 630 people read snippets, short stories, fanfics, and chapters. That's not a small number of people.

One dollar from even a fraction of those people is enough to cover the cost of writing another book. It covers the time spent writing and editing, the cost of getting a professional editor for the book, and the cost of the cover art. A dollar a month goes a long way.

After being here a little while, the goal has shifted slightly and I have a new story to tell...

Goal: Write More Books.

While I was writing THE POLAR TERROR I had the best news sent to me... a reader was reading it out loud to their partner each time a chapter posted and they were loving it. I was loving it! Writing was fun again because I wasn't waiting for the book to go through the sometimes lengthy production process. The chapters were messier (eek!) but the community was there.
And, as I finished THE POLAR TERROR I realized two things...
1) The next Heroes and Villains books was nowhere near ready for this kind of scrutiny. My readers are smart people and even with an unproofed draft they expect something.
2) One of the books on my shelf was haunting me.

I put LADY OF THE LAKE down after my agent firmly refused to shop any urban fantasy/paranormal/portal fantasy books because girls with swords just weren't selling. But I love this book. It's about the hunt for the next King Arthur in modern day Glasgow. There's dragons, and cars, and kelpies, and zombies, and Camelot, and fey queens, and betrayals, and memories of the first King Arthur and I LOVE IT!

So, I went to my crit partner and said, "Remember that one book with swords and the death wish? I was thinking-" And that's as far as I got because three of my crit partners all magically appeared in the fairytale land of Twitter to tell me that my life would be in danger if I didn't make this book available.

And now LADY OF THE LAKE is coming to you.

$1 - Eternal Gratitude (and chapters of your favorite [new] Villains)... full access to the book I'm currently posting, all long-form editions of blog posts, and other fun stuff like photographs, sketches, and sneak peeks. Throw a dollar my way for the fun shenanigans and good karma.

$2 - Copy of the final ebook in mobi, epub, and PDF (must back 3 chapters at this level)... whatever book you start pledging during the run of is the book you get unless you specify otherwise. This is also a great level to back the novel at just because you love me. <3

$5 - Behind-the-scenes... plotting notes, deleted scenes, discussion of villain motivations, and more - and you'll get named in the acknowledgments at the back of the book. With LADY OF THE LAKE this means posts about Romans in Britain, the Legio II Augusta, mythology, Latin, and other bit and pieces of research I've collected over the years. Fair Warning: it's a lot of research.

$10 - Q & A posts .... ask questions and get answers for questions about writing, editing, life, the universe, and everything - 2 Q&A posts per month - plus all previous tiers

$20 - Print copy of the final book (signed and shipped internationally) plus all the previous tiers... all my books that are published on Parteon are later edited, fine-tuned, polished, perfected, and published through Inkprint Press. Print editions are done through Ingramspark as trade paperbacks with a glossy cover. They are phenomenal and wonderful to have to show off in your home.

$100 - Stan Lee Cameo (hop in-hop out level) ... most people do not have a few hundred to drop on an author every month, but for one chapter? Do that and I'll sit down with you to design an original character that will have a cameo in the current book I'm posting. Become a minor superhero, a spy, a doctor, or just the fun side character running with an ice cream maker.
FOR THE LADY OF THE LAKE THERE ARE VERY FEW OPENINGS. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE.

You pay once a month. No fuss. No muss. No stress.

Chapters will be posted bi-weekly, but since some of the chapters of LADY OF THE LAKE are very *very* long they will be broken up with half posted one week and half posted the following week. That means there will be as few as two posts a month, and as many as four, with a max word count of 8000 words. This is not a short story.

Behind-The-Scenes posts will go up at random with only one promised per month.

It won't be fast, but that's okay. Toss $1 in my Patreon cap and you can come read at your leisure when the whole book is up. Toss in $2, forget about this website, and wait for the ebook to arrive. Toss in more and maybe I'll do a happy jig or something, you never know.

Whatever works for you, thank you.

Thank you for coming this far. Thank you for reading. Thank you for considering this project. Even if you don't back me on Patreon, thank you. If you choose to donate, thank you. If you're here for every book, or just the one series you love, THANK YOU.

None of what I do would be possible without readers like you. You are the one I think about when I create a new character. You're the one I want to see smile when the hero wins. You make the magic of storytelling possible be being here and reading. THANK YOU.

The model in the promo art for LADY OF THE LAKE are Tanya Lilith whose work can be found on DevinatArt.com.  <3
