About

My name is Mark Brown, musician, teacher and author of El Libro Real de la Música Tradicional Venezolana (www.LibroReal.com).
I've been dedicated to researching and transcribing Venezuelan folk music since 2001. I have two 500 page books of musical transcriptions ready for printing but lack the resources to do so on my own. I live in Caracas, Venezuela and do all my work here. Much of my work is done at my computer at home, but I must frequently travel throughout Venezuela to meet with musicians to discover new (and old) music, and check my transcriptions with the composers for accuracy.
Since March 2018 I have no income since all my students have left the country, and I am fully dedicated to transcribing and preserving Venezuela's folk music. The only motivation for this work is a deep love for Venezuela's musical culture and the confidence that this work is necessary and a worthy endeavor. I currently have a third and fourth book already well advanced and waiting to begin the intricate process of checking note for note, syllable for syllable, for accuracy, and I am starting two more books of the complete compositions of two of the most important composers of Venezuelan folk music: Pablo Camacaro and Henry Martinez, who each have hundreds of compositions that need to be written and preserved.
I am at a crossroads in terms of staying in Venezuela to continue this work or to move back to the USA and make a decent living working at something else. I need financial support to be able to stay in Venezuela and continue what I consider my life's work: the seven books that will encompass the project "El Libro Real de la Música Tradicional de Venezuela".
I also work with my wife Jessica with our Fundación Libro Real, in which we provide strings and other musical materials to performers, composers, teachers, and students who are dedicated to folk music in Venezuela. We have visited almost every state in the country and delivered hundreds of sets of strings to performers and institutions such as "orquestas típicas" of several states, and music schools that teach the traditional styles of music.

I am very thankful for any contribution, however small, that will allow me to continue this important work. Thank you!

UPDATE: (August 5, 2019) I am currently in New York City for several months to create a KickStarter campaign to try to publish El Libro Real in the United States. At the same time I am continuing my work revising the first two books for the second edition, and transcribing new music for books 3 and 4 and for the book of Venezuelan Christmas music. I am also working regularly with composer Pablo Camacaro on the book of his complete musical works. Fundación Libro Real sends money directly to several musicians in Venezuela, for basic needs. Our campaign to donate strings in Venezuela is here: www.GoFundMe.com/VenezuelanStrings.

Thank you for supporting my efforts and for caring about Venezuela in this difficult time.
