HOLY JEEZ! Meeting this goal will cover all previous expenses AND my rental and utility payments each month -- my biggest and baddest expense. Having these costs covered allows me to focus all my attention on drawing comics, rather than juggling lots of artistic odd jobs to make ends meet. You are incredible people and I love you a LOT. To celebrate, you'll get to vote on the subject of my next comic. Is there something weird or wonderful or adventurous that you've been dying to learn more about or try? I'll take suggestions and then run a poll for the winner and make a comic about whatever you decide on!

About

Hi! My name's Lucy Bellwood. I'm a freelance illustrator and cartoonist working out of Periscope Studio in Portland, OR. Since 2007 I've been an avid lover of sailing and tall ships, working as a deckhand aboard the Lady Washington and other vessels along the West Coast. In 2010 I began making comics about what it's like to be a tall ship sailor in the 21st century and haven't looked back since.

You can find more of me on Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter. Stay in touch!

Well hello there! My name's Lucy Bellwood and I like making comics about boats (and a lot of other stuff).

In the last four years I've worked on a huge variety of projects, including comics about sensory deprivation float tanksthorny breakupsfeisty gendarmesquirky fantasy realms, magical tattoos, unusual sex toys, female Navy veteranstambourine players, maritime historysocial dance and sexualitydefinitely-not-filthy sailing terminology, and whitewater rafting.

I love drawing comics about my experiences -- whether they're adventurous or just downright bizarre -- and making them accessible for everyone through the web. I want to encourage you to try something new or unusual. I want you to get a sense of what it's really like. And I want to do it on a regular basis, online, for everyone to read for free.

But wait...

Unfortunately, as a full-time freelance artist, I still need to take on a lot of non-personal work each month to cover my bills and expenses. This means I spend less time focusing on the stories I really want to share and more time prioritizing commercial gigs. So I'm turning to Patreon as an avenue to help me dedicate more time to producing free comics for you to read!

Basically, everyone wins.

So How Does This Work, Exactly?

I'm so glad you asked.

Patreon is a platform where generous and wonderful people like you can become patrons of the arts by directly supporting creators like me. It's sort of like a Kickstarter, but think smaller amounts over a longer period of time. You pick an amount you'd like to send me each month, and in return you gain access to sweet Patreon-exclusive content (check the full list of perks below for details) and enjoy the benefit of my undying gratitude and affection. You can change or cancel your patronage at any time, and you'll only be charged once a month at the amount you choose to give.

Other Creators Charge Per Comic, Why Aren't You Doing That?

Great question.

Since I have a lot of current comics projects that will best be shared all at once, rather than doled out at a page a week, I decided to set this campaign up as a monthly nut rather than charging per update.

My schedule at present is erratic, and the comics I'm working on are about all sorts of different things, but I aim to get new finished content up for you as often as I can. Those of you donating at the $2 per month level will get the full behind-the-scenes scoop on where I'm at with these various projects and goals.

I see this page as a tool for keeping me focused on bringing you shiny new comics at least once a month. Even if I continue taking on freelance work to pay my bills, every bit of support I receive through Patreon is a reminder to set aside time for the projects I care about most, so I can share them with you!

Thanks so much for reading through my page! I appreciate the heck outta all of you.
