About Michael Niessen

Hi,
My name is Michael, a Belgian nomad photographer trying to capture beauty in any form. I have been slow-travelling full-time since 2014 on a very tight budget, mostly in Europe.
Though I focus mainly on architecture photography, I also enjoy shooting candid street photo, landscapes and general travel pictures.
You might only rarely see those pictures, but I do sometimes just sit for an hour by a pond shooting ducklings, or by a flowerbed waiting for bees to fly in front of my lens ;)

I've started this Patreon to make the work I feel called to make, free from any commercial agenda. This involves taking and sharing pictures that have value, but don't necessarily have a way to earn money in the modern marketplace.

Beyond taking pictures and sharing my photography knowledge, I love the post-processing part, the moment where what you see on the screen really becomes how you remember the place or subject, and seeing the picture instantly brings back the feelings you felt when you took it.
Careful editing can transform a simple snapshot, or sometimes a really ugly image, into what deserves to be called a photograph, and I absolutely love to teach how to do it, sharing from the general techniques to the obscure little function you had no idea existed but will save your life (well, not really).
My editing tools of choice are mainly Lightroom, which I've used almost daily since version 2.0 back in 2009, and Photoshop, into which I started dipping my toes in the late 90s.

By becoming a Patron, you support the work I make and get greater access to exclusive content. Your support gives me a consistent income which enables me to keep doing what I do and grow both as a photographer and an educator.

Pay what you can afford and you can upgrade to the next level (or downgrade) at any time as you wish. In return for as little as the cost of cup of coffee a month (or less, depending on where you live), you get in-depth access to the images I create, and my occasional musings about photography and travel. Your membership, depending on the tier can also include:

  1. Access to work in progress.
  2. Training on how to make better images, especially in urban settings.
  3. Post-processing tips, from selecting your images and general advice to advanced editing techniques.
  4. Behind-the-scenes thoughts and insights from my time spent exploring the world.
  5. Photo-challenges.
I do have other rewards in mind which I'll build in and add as time goes on. I'll also be in touch from time to time to get ideas about how I can better reward my patrons.

Have a look at the membership tiers for more options and information. Each tier is a suggested minimum pledge. You can choose a tier and pledge any amount from the minimum on up.

If you'd like to see more of my work before you commit to a pledge, check my public content here on Patreon, visit my website MNiessenPhoto.com or join me on Instagram @MNiessenPhoto.

If you want to know more about how Patreon works, they made this short video.

Another thing I can't wait for are photo-challenges, which are intended to both motivate and [ahem] challenge you and me. The idea is to choose a specific theme or limitation (only wide-angle, for instance, just for fun!), 30 minutes to shoot, 30 minutes to select your favorite picture and edit it. Then we'll share, discuss and give feedback.

I'm excited about this new adventure. It has taken me a long time to finally get over my fear of failure and launch this. It is going to be a safe yet wild ride to uncharted territories.

I hope you'll join me and if you enjoy it, help spread the word too.

Photographically Yours,

Michael
Goals
$0 of $500 per month
You're buying me time to create and give back more. I'm still be a struggling photographer, but I won't be afraid to become homeless anymore.

Upon first reaching this goal, one lucky patron chosen at random, independently of tier, will be sent a 11" x 8.5" print (~28 x 22 cm; or closest size, depending on the picture; unframed) of any of my work on Premium Satin photo paper, with worldwide shipping included (not including import taxes or other applicable local fees).

All patrons will be able to submit one picture they'd like me to edit, and 3 of them will be chosen. The step-by-step editing process will be shared in Patrons-only videos or articles, and the edited pictures shared on my social media (Instagram story, Twitter and Facebook; unless you'd prefer not).
