I am a poet, memoirist, essayist and translator of Yiddish (and occasionally Spanish) literature. Much of my writing centers on my experience growing up with a chronic illness, about which I have been completing a memoir. Rather than writing from the assumption that chronic illness can only be experienced as a loss, my writing treats illness as a valuable, albeit extraordinarily difficult, experience unto itself. It also explores the unique ways in which illness shapes one's life when one has grown up sick, rather than becoming so in adulthood.

You can read about my memoir here: http://www.maiaevrona.com/memoir/
For a summary of my memoir, and experience with illness, you can read my personal essay "Immigrating to the In-Between," published here: http://hekint.org/2018/03/27/immigrating-to-the-in...

While illness infuses all of my poems, even those that do not explicitly mention it, my work as a poet also draws heavily from my work as a Yiddish translator, and my Jewish heritage. A sampling of my poetry can be found here: http://www.maiaevrona.com/poetry/

Should you choose to subscribe to any one of the tiers I have listed below, I will also send you a copy of my "poet's statement," detailing the process through which I create poetry.

As for my translation work, I have translated poetry and prose by a number of writers, though of late I have been absorbed with the writing of Abraham Sutzkever. In 2016, I was awarded a fellowship in translation from the National Endowment for the Arts to translate Sutzkever's collection Poems from My Diary/Lider fun Togbukh. A sampling of these translations can be found here: http://www.maiaevrona.com/abraham-sutzkevers-poems...

Not long ago, I published an opinion piece about the importance of the National Endowment for the Arts and the impact receiving this fellowship had on my life: https://news.artnet.com/opinion/nea-maia-evrona-10...

I believe in the value of the arts, though for most of us, creating art--whether it be literature or painting or music--is not a lucrative endeavor. I'm creating this page in part to simply demonstrate that my own work has value. If you agree, any monetary contributions truly would make it easier for me to produce my writing and translations.
