Hi, there, and welcome!

I’m looking forward to sharing my writer’s life and helping you with your own. This will include all sorts of tips, tricks, resources, and prompts to encourage you to practice and hone your craft, some taken from Brainstorm Your Book, and some exclusive to my patrons. Plus, you will get exclusive access to unedited parts of my works-in-progress, a glimpse into the struggles I still have with my own writing (and how I work through them), and the chance to help me with the choices I am making in real-time.

The main focus here is going to be on creating better fiction writers—which includes me. We've all got room to learn and grow as writers and authors, whether we've just started or have fifty books published, and we all have the chance to learn from each other. I will show you my weaknesses as well as my strengths, so you feel free to do the same, and we can start conversations to share what works for us and what doesn't.

At most levels of support, you will get a weekly newsletter with writing tips, story prompts, and craft resources, and once a month, I will hold a flash fiction contest, where you can submit a 100-word story based on a word, phrase, or prompt to win a prize, a winner's badge for your blog or website, and eternal bragging rights. On top of that, you can look forward to free books and writing tools, the occasional random gift to patrons, and at higher levels, you can access phone or Skype consultations as you write and publish your own book.

If all this sounds good, and you are ready to jump into the authorial fray with me, sign up to be a patron and let’s get started!

About me:
I am an award-winning novelist with more than thirty years’ experience as a professional writer, editor, and designer, and the author of Brainstorm Your Book: Planning the Parts of Your Next Novel. As well as publishing historical fiction, historical romance, and poetry (with too many works-in-progress to list), I've taught small-group academic, business, and creative writing courses and worked in journalism, media relations, marketing and advertising, proposal and grant writing, technical and business communications, and print and web design. I hold a BA in Writing, summa cum laude and With Distinction, from the University of Colorado Denver.

So, you've started the novel! Congratulations! Now comes the hard part: getting through the first (then second and third) draft. Never fear, bazillions of people have done it before you, and there are tons of resources to help—some here on this site and lots in other places. Still, you've come to the right place for support, advice, encouragement, and commiseration.

Benefits:

  • One free PDF copy of Brainstorm Your Book

Maybe you've finished your first draft, maybe the second or third, or maybe you are slogging through the editing-and-revision process. At any rate, you've got a novel in your hands, which is an enormous accomplishment! But don’t stop your momentum now. You've got some distance to go before you publish, independently or traditionally, and this site is here to help.

OMG! It’s done! You've dotted I’s and crossed T’s and minded P’s and Q’s until your eyes have crossed, but it’s ready to go out into the world. Whether you are submitting to agents and publishers or publishing independently, now you've got marketing work to do. Writing a synopsis or a blurb or book proposal, formatting for submission, researching your options… I've done it all at least once—probably a lot more than once—and will help you out every step of the way.

Benefits:

  • One free print copy of Brainstorm Your Book
  • Free access for life to extra Brainstorm Your Book worksheets
  • One half-hour phone or Skype consultation with Mari
  • Everything from the lower tiers
Midlist

If you've published at least once, you have a special view of the progression of writing a novel and taking it to market. And you have another book (or ten) to write. You've nailed down your process, you know if you are a plotter or pantser, and while you may have honing to do with your craft, most of your tools are sharp. Bring them here to give them a razor edge.

 Benefits:

  • One review of any 10 pages of your novel
  • A one-hour phone or Skype consultation with Mari about your reviewed pages
  • Your name in the Acknowledgements of any of my new books (as long as you are a patron when I publish)
  • Everything from the lower tiers, except consultations
Bestseller
$50 or more per month 0 of 10 patrons
While you may not be a literal bestseller, you produce a lot of quality words. You've got scads of books in print (or at least a couple), and you've been through the drafting and editing mill a time or two. But no matter how long you've been writing or how many books under your belt, growth is an inevitable (and beautiful) part of being an author. The benefits at this level are designed to help.

 Benefits:

  • One review of any 25 pages of your novel
  • One hour of phone or Skype consultation, author coaching, or brainstorming with Mari, EVERY MONTH you are a patron are at this level
  • Everything from the lower tiers, except review/consultations
Goals
$0 of $250 per month
When I reach $250/month, I will send a brand-new writing craft book every month that I stay there to one patron chosen at random.
