About Marina is Red

I consider myself to be one of the original riot grrrls, having played in bands throughout the 90’s. This fanzine and blog ‘Marina is Red’ forms part of my postgraduate research into female representation in the alternative music scene. I’m an avid fan of rock music and have an extensive record collection dominated by female musicians. I can be found most weekends flicking through the vinyls and CD’s at my nearest music shop or at a gig.

I’ve played the Bass since I was 12 and have owned my Rickenbacker 4001 1972 since I was seventeen. I also play the piano and I sing. I started off on the punk scene in Crewe with my two bands StoneFish and Marina Red and still play in a band, The Dying Lights with my great buddies Derek, Tim and Glyn.
I have travelled extensively throughout Europe and used to live in Spain, where I got my first degree. I started my MA as a ‘mature’ student and have just graduated. My dissertation “Spanish Women in alternative hard rock music subcultures: Gender maneuvering through third and fourth wave feminism” and I did a research trip to Madrid and interviewed many local musicians and bands. I absolutely loved this project and am hoping to one day turn it into a PhD, I have been offered a place so watch this space!
The ‘Zine and blog www.riotgrrrlzine.co.uk is my small contribution to the DIY punk scene, which I have loved since the early 90s. It gives exposure to artists, musicians, writers and all-round creative types. I was encouraged by my university professor to keep a blog of my experiences and this was the result! Whatmore, I also got a bit miffed when looking through the music ‘zines WHSmiths have to offer these days and got a bit sick of seeing the same old bands on the front. Most of them 30+ years old and most of them men. I decided to create a magazine that I would like to read and decided to share it with you all. Even though it’s a kinda Riot Grrrl Zine, the title is that because I identify as a Riot Grrrl, but the ‘zine and blog features pretty much everything and everyone that would include themselves in a kinda music or fashion subculture.

Patreons will receive a copy of my 'zine, free downloads of my music and exclusive content on a monthly basis.
