Hello, friends! I'm Melissa, the writer of a whole bunch of books, novellas, and short stories, most of which are set in the Old World universe. If you've seen the Scarlett Bernard series or the Boundary Magic series, that would be me. I also have a trilogy for Tor.com that begins with Nightshades, and I spend part of my year traveling to science fiction and fantasy conventions, where I often speak about genre, feminism, writing, and parenting. You may have met me there, in which case I really hope we got a chance to high-five.

I'm joining Patreon at this point in my career for two reasons: first, because when you spend all your working hours building a world, you create a lot of material that never makes it to the pages of the novel. Sometimes this is in your head and sometimes it makes it into a document, but it’s always precious. I’ve built such an expansive world at this point that I’ve got ideas for short bits and updates that I’m dying to write, but I have no place to fit them in a regular, 90,000-word novel (or even one of my “short stories” which are technically more like baby novellas).

The second reason is a bit more selfish: I'd like to make enough money to create breathing room for myself and my future work. I've got some ideas for spec projects that would require me to jump off the book contract treadmill for a bit, and the only way I can do that is with financial assistance. So by supporting my Patreon, you're not just getting new content-- you're actually helping me make more.

Still on the fence about joining? Here are a couple of things my current Patrons have said about my page:

Erica: "I had been considering joining Patreon but lost the idea in the craziness of life. Then one day, Melissa posted on FB or Twitter that Scarlett's life was continuing to happen and I realized I was missing it! I joined up and am so absolutely please with all the posted content - Scarlett's life, Lex tidbits, Melissa's life (Frankie pictures!!!). I'm so happy to support her art and she unknowingly supports my sanity at the same time"

Benjamin: "Melissa F. Olson is a fantastic author, but if you're reading this, I imagine you already knew that. If you're a fan of her Old World novels, you need to become a patron. Scarlett's Diary is wonderful supplemental material that you can only get on Patreon. It starts mere days after Shadow Hunt and gives wonderful insight into Scarlett's day-to-day not-in-crisis world"

Team Scarlett
$5 or more per month

Have you been wondering how Scarlett Bernard is handling life as a mom? At this level, you’ll get weekly posts from
Scarlett about how her new life is going in the Los Angeles Old World, framed as a diary she’s keeping for her fellow nulls. Posts come out weekly on Friday mornings, four times each month, and they’re exclusive to Patreon...until they hit roughly 80,000 words. At that point I will self-publish them as a book, and patrons at this level will receive a free digital copy.

Pop Culture Club!
$10 or more per month only 91 left

In addition to everything from the previous tiers, this level also receives periodic updates throughout the month with my reactions to whatever I'm reading or watching. At the end of each month, you'll receive an exclusive post or video with at least ten of my current picks in books, movies, and TV (and maybe even video or tabletop games). You'll also receive a dedicated email with a formatted list of these recommendations, so you can print it out and take with you to the bookstore, library, Amazon, etc. This tier is meant to be interactive, so on the first of every month I'll be putting up a post asking YOU for your recs and reactions.

As a thank you for your participation, every three months you'll receive a signed chapbook of the Scarlett Bernard diary in the mail!  Chapbooks are mailed in January, April, July, and October.

Swag Squad!

Along with everything from previous tiers, this elite squad gets an actual mailed package from me EVERY month containing some kind of swag or souvenir: a signed book, a tote bag, or even a handmade creation! Four times a year this will be a signed chapbook of the Scarlett Bernard Diary.

Elite Squad!
$50 or more per month only 9 left

In addition to EVERYTHING from previous tiers, at this level you receive the following extra-special bonuses:

  • Mailed thank-you postcards from wherever work takes me. The timing on these will vary by month, but in 2019 alone I’ll still be heading out on at least three more trips.
  • Tuckerization in the Scarlett Bernard Diaries or my next novel (in which case it may take some time to come out). Your name, or the name of a person you choose, will appear as a character (who’s probably gonna get killed) in my next book. [I reserve the right to ask for a different name if you choose something too out there, ie Boaty McBoatface or Phil McCracken.]
  • A thank you in the acknowledgments of my next novel. Yes, your name could be in print twice in the next book alone.

When I reach this level, I'll add a monthly AMA video, available to all subscribers!
