About

Michelle Akers Horse Rescue is a 501c3 public charity providing sanctuary to horses and animals. I’ve always loved animals and as a kid, I dreamed of one day belong like Alec in the book The Black Stallion. After I retired from the USWNT in 2000, I had a small farm with several horses and one day I was asked to foster a horse who'd been almost starved to death...I wanted to help, but I wasn't sure I could handle it. The horse had been starved and was literally skin and bones. She was in very bad shape and the man who did it would be criminally charged. I had no experience with anything close to this. I was afraid I’d be overwhelmed with emotion in trying to care for her. I told them I'd think about it... and the following afternoon I walked Zoe into my barn with the slim hope that she would survive and the promise that in the very least I would love her until the day she died. Since that day, I've never been the same. It's been more difficult than I ever imagined and also the greatest of blessings each day I am with them.

The animals who come to me arrive from all kinds of situations. Some are cruelly abused and severely neglected, some come from well intended people who incur hardship. My job is not to judge or get caught up in the circumstances, but to just take care of the animal. It's hard sometimes to do that with out thinking about the cruelty they’ve endured, but the animals have taught me that although they have suffered and remember everything that's happened to them, they are remarkably willing to start fresh given the time and right care.

They don't want pity, sympathy, or kisses and hugs. Compassion is necessary, along with firm leadership, respect, and a lot of give and take, but mostly they want time to let the change of circumstances sink in, their physical needs met, and the opportunity to be a horse again. To become full of themselves again. It is one of my greatest joys to look into their eyes and see their spark and spirit has returned. I still have a lot to learn and that is part of what is exciting to me. It's ever changing and demands the best and most of me every day.

It’s been over 13 years now since I walked Zoe into my barn and even though she’s passed on, she will always be in my heart. Sometimes I think that is all anyone really needs. To have their ‘herd’ and know they are loved. This has become my goal and it’d be my privilege to have you on this journey with me. Saving one horse—one animal at a time to help them have their best life for the rest of their life❤️🐴🐶😍💪

New manure spreader! This thing works harder than I do every single day! The old one has a bent axle and is barely able to get the job done and unfixable!
