I want to share my journey with you. It's hard for me to stay on task, there is so much to write about, help with, create and achieve. I used to keep a diary when I was a teenager, so this is my version here. You will see what motivates me, where my inspiration comes from, where I hope to go and all the memories and laughs along the way. I still will never 'name names' though..

About

Michelle Mara
is survivor of the sex trade in New Zealand. She is a single mother who writes and speaks publicly and independently about her experiences and insights into sexual violence and prostitution in NZ during prohibition until after decriminalisation. She has been a refugee support worker, foster parent, mental health and disability advocate, social support adviser for young families during the aftermath of 9/11 in the U.S Military, and has voluntarily housed numerous at risk teens in NZ. She uses written language for both power and therapy in her advocacy work and healing from sexual violence.

Michelle completed her Post Graduate studies through Cambridge University.  Chronic trauma related illness took her from paid employment at the University of Auckland.  She discovered her voice in writing again after her recent diagnosis of ADHD, and now advocates for the Equality/ Nordic model independently.  She co-founded Wahine Toa Rising NZ.  She now runs a support group, which gives emotional support and information to survivors of the sex trade and contributes regularly to the abolitionist movement's fight to end all forms of sexual exploitation of Women and girls.

Supporting Michelle not only helps her support herself and family, but it enables her to create the much needed conversations around the reality of decriminilisation and the sex trade - poorly acknowledged and addressed child prostitution and abuse, gate-keeping of information on numbers and harm to women, collusion with those who profit from women's exploitation, a growing market for sex trafficking and prostitution, coercion, unreliable statistics, lack of access to vital information and support. Finally, and most importantly, your contribution helps her support the women who contact her for their with their stories and needs.
