About Magpie at Midnight

I am a writer, paper cut artist and animator, and documentary film maker. Over the last few years I have been exploring using different art forms to tell stories about people and the sticky complicated emotional human lives we lead.

I am now working on a project called the Feeding Jasmine Valentine project that brings all these strands together that will encompass at least three components of work.

1) A fantasy novel series - I have completed a first draft of the first novel (called Feeding Jasmine Valentine) in the series, and am now editing. Here is the pitch:

Environmental destruction and climate change rage, and the world stands on the precipice of disaster. But, deep in the forest, an old magic is stirring. Julianne and Daisy are flatmates in London, living unaware of their latent powers. Meanwhile, a Goblin lurks in the shadows. Julianne is an artist who is struggling to recover from a past filled with trauma at the hands of an ex boyfriend. Daisy is a midwife, who has lived with Julianne for many years. But change is in the air. As spring turns to summer both women become aware of powers that are a little less than normal, and set off on the path to discover their true selves, and to finally confront the Goblin.
2) Videos in which I will take a camera out into bits of London to talk about ideas I've had for the novel and how they relate to different places. These will probably take the form of me out and about on foot, with my baby in a pram, because that's the only way I get anything done at the moment. Probably hosted on vimeo/youtube.

3) A documentary film about the nature of heart break/ people's experiences of heartbreak, which picks up on a thread of ideas from the novel.

4) Other possible ideas - meet ups or events that are based things that happen in the novel, a screening of the documentary, other ideas welcome.

I plan to use any money earned here in support of this project to work with editors/other creative professional to improve the quality of my work and build an effective platform to launch the project from.
