My name is Mika.
First I want to say thank you to all who have supported me so far on my path as an artist.
For those of you that I am just becoming acquainted with here, my name is Mika Mae Jones.
I am an illustrator who also happens to live her life as a model, an actress, and a writer.
My first love in life was illustration. I grew up with two debilitating diseases, Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy and Epilepsy. Even with these diseases I was lucky to be stronger than most with my condition.
My mother was in a wheelchair my entire life, but witnessing her accomplish so much taught me how strong the human spirit can be. She taught me to never give up on my dreams and passions in this life. My younger brother, who is also diagnosed with this condition, is also an artist.
Why is this relevant? It's relevant because I have always drawn pictures and created in response to the limitations of my disease. I could go anywhere I wanted to or see anything I wanted to see simply by picking up a pencil. It gave me a voice and a sense of purpose in this life. I believe that art is an avenue or instrument for healing. I believe that art has the ability to save the lives of both the artist and the audience because it can inspire change.
As I grew older my art became darker and yet also more rooted in creating a vehicle for light within darkness. It became a narrative about the human body and the concept of strength in vulnerability. It became a dialogue about spirituality in the face of mortality.
After my mother died I experienced a deep depression where I destroyed nearly everything I created. When I finally regained my ability to illustrate I realized how lucky I was to have this ability.
Many of you know me as a model/actress - which are both positions of equal importance to me because they helped me accept and love my body in spite my illnesses.
My Patreon is about teaching drawing techniques, helping others find their voice within, and creating pieces that interact with the desires of the viewer while also expressing my own perspective.
I intend to have videos on here about drawing, polaroids for sale of my own modeling (and commissions from you), illustrations for sale, and plenty of truth in my blog about my processes.
Unlike Bukowski, I do not believe in the idea to "find what you love and let it kill you" but rather to "find what you love and let it heal you."
Art is what I love and in many ways it has healed me. I would love to help you find your path as well through my work.
Thank you for reading my very long introduction and I hope that we can become friends if we aren't already.
Love and Light,
Mika
