Who Am I?I'm Natalie Grigson, an author, illustrator, and dog mom from Austin, Texas.
In the past decade, I've written seven books. Most of them have been fantastical, whimsical, lighthearted adventure stories for both kids and adults. My most recent two books, though, focus on something a bit different: mindfulness, body image, and self acceptance for kids and teens.
These are subjects that are so close to my heart, as someone who found a meditation practice in my early twenties in order to heal from years of disordered eating. I think it very well may have saved my life.
I don't want kids to wake up one day in their early twenties, though, and realize their life might need saving. I want to give them the tools early on, so they can be empowered, healthy, and awake.
What Am I Doing? That's where these books come in. "Just Call Me Is" and its new sequel "Call Me Perfect" (available Fall 2017) help kids and teens, first, by introducing them to a mindful way of living, and then diving deeper, specifically focusing on self acceptance and appearance.
They do this by way of a story, followed by journal pages and tons of exercises - a completely interactive experience between the reader and his/her Inner Self (or Is!). And these have the potential to be just the first two in a long line of books.
Why Patreon? With your support on Patreon, I'll be able to take the time I need to focus on, not only spreading the word about these books, but ordering copies and getting them into bookstores and schools, working with kids and parents directly on these issues, and, of course, writing more books, year after year, to help kids and teens who are struggling with everything from gender and sexuality to addictions.
These are things that publishers don't seem to think kids can handle. I say they can.
I hope you'll help me in getting these books out into the world.
