About Niamh Shaw

Hi there!

I'm Niamh and I really care about science, space, and what people are most curious about. I want to know how I can bring science and technology to you, and help us see how we can live together in harmony on our planet in a more sustainable way. And I think my personal journey to get to space can do all of this, And more!

I’m a performer, writer & communicator with 2 degrees in engineering & a PhD in science. Using my passions for space, science, storytelling, performance and writing to share the human story of science, I connect with the public through podcasts, videos, public talks, family events, workshops, social media, and chatting on TV and the radio, I write theatre shows and make art installations about it. All of it is about my quest to get to space as a storyteller, but bringing you along with me is a VITAL part of the project! I need to connect with as many people as I can to succeed in my personal quest.

I'm usually out on the road communicating and connecting with people all the time. But like with many of you, the pandemic has forced me to look at what I do and change my medium. Fast! I've relied on awards and grant funding to get me this far, at least 30% of my work is pro-bono because sharing my work outweighs the financial importance of what I'm doing. But without regular support, it restricts my activities.

Your patronage would be super helpful in allowing me to continue to provide the 'Humans of Space' podcast, the 'Galaxy Squad' video episodes, do online workshops, and speak to schools all around the world to chat about Space and our planet.

My next project 'Walking Slowly to Space' is a global walking project to meet and chat with people all over the world about our planet and how space. Since the pandemic, I have had to pause plans on that, but I'm still working with designers and technical teams to build and create the necessary equipment. Everyone who supports me on Patreon allows me to continue this vital work.

PLUS; 10% of everything that you provide goes towards chosen charities of my guests, and to the global Earth conscious organisation, WWF (World Wildlife Fund).

THE STORY SO FAR:
Passionate about igniting peoples curiosity, I’ve set myself a life’s mission to be a writer in residence onboard the International Space Station a vessel that has been orbitting Earth for almost 20 years. Because I waited over 30 years to live the life I truly wanted. What stopped me? Fear mostly, & restricting my perception of what is possible. Now, I challenge that & want to share my journey as I dare to make the impossible, possible.

I’ve already created 3 theatre shows, 3 multimedia installations, oodles of public events, hit a zero gravity flight, witnessed live launches & landings of astronaut crews, completed over 20 EVA hrs as analogue astronaut at simulated Mars missions. I've just written a book about the story so far- 'DREAM BIG' An Irishwomans Space Odyssey' from Mercier Press.

I’ve spoken at events including WIRED Live UK, Space Rocks (ESA), NASA Johnson Space Centre, Inspirefest, New Scientist (UK), at academic & space-related conferences, schools, career events & am a regular contributor to BBC’s Sky at Night magazine since 2016. All of this work is part of my #getniamhtospace quest.

With strong support from Ireland, I’m co-recipient of the ‘Outstanding contribution to STEM communications’ award from Science Foundation Ireland & was Artist in Residence at CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory, Cork from 2014-2019. I’m especially proud to have spoken at Áras an Uachtarain, in response to our President's ’Women in STEM’ speech for International Women’s Day 2019 & to be 2019/20 Irish Girl Guides Ambassador. And as a guest on Ireland's top TV shows ‘The Late Late Show’ & ‘The Tommy Tiernan Show’ RTÉ TV, I spoke about the story so far & the need to engage with our planet. I've spoken on childrens TV programmes too and speak to schools all the time. But there’s still a long way yet to go and I need everyone’s support in order to succeed. I’ve made projects with European Space Agency, British Council, [email protected], Lottie Dolls, ESERO Ireland, The Ark Children’s Centre in Dublin and more.

If you like what I do, would like to know more, are interested in supporting my  #getniamhtospace activities, I’d love your support. I'm not going to stop until I get to space and your support means that you can become a part of my journey, every step of the way. Because I especially want to connect with you and make you part of the bigger #getniamhto space quest too.

Thank you for your support.

Ad astra

Niamh
