Hello and welcome! I'm Orna Ross, a writer of novels and poetry and Director of the Alliance of Independent Authors and the Creativist Club

Alongside my own writing, I've long been on a personal mission to empower other creatives, through digital publishing and creative business.

My Patreon page is this philosophy applied to poetry. Its aim is to bring more poetry to the world and see poets properly paid for their work.

Reader Patron and Writer Patrons

The page has two kinds of patrons.

Readers

Firstly, reader patrons are offered one of my own inspirational poems, hot off the creative presses, on the first day of each month--and different books and bonuses at different tier levels. Each month's new poem remains exclusive to patrons here and will not be published anywhere else for at least 90 days.

Poets

From November 2018, I'm also offering a mid-month "Making A Life And A Living In Poetry" podcast to poet patrons.

This Patreon-only podcast is not about the craft of words but the craft of business. It encourages poets to take advantage of today's digital tools and techniques to set up a self-run poetry enterprise. It also gives guidance on how to publish poetry profitably.

This podcast is exclusive to my poet patrons here on Patreon and it won't be broadcast anywhere else.

Poetry and People Power

People power is rocking poetry, taking it out of dusty libraries into streets and pubs, political meetings and festivals. Can people power also offer creative and financial freedom to poets and songwriters? With your help, I'm hoping to prove the answer to that question is a resounding: YES.

That social media, global audiences and crowdsourced micro-payments can generate a viable and sustainable income stream, even from minority artforms like poetry.

I'm hoping also to show how poetry matters more than ever in our fast-paced, distractable, digital times.

Why I Write Poetry

A poem that works is a sliver of magic, transporting us beyond the surface of life.

Poems invite us to pay creative attention, to wake up, to enter the imaginal, to remember our dreams, to value insights and inspiration. Poetry returns us to ourself, our whole self, our truest self.

A good poem comes at us sideways, catches us by surprise, drops us into that place beyond place: the creative space between the words.

It does this by detailing what's physically true (that's why a good poem will always have strong images, not just conceptual thought, and what is also universally, conceptually true (which is why a good poem will also have a unifying theme (not just random sense impressions).

That's the magic: conceptual and physical, inner and outer, material and spiritual illuminated, each in the other.

That's poetry.

The Writer’s Call: A Poem For My Readers

Here is one of the very first poems I ever wrote, about writing itself. It explains my writing mission and what happens when two imaginations, the writer's and the reader's, come together within the words of an inspirational poem.

Your words must clear the ground for love,
I heard it all declare. I kissed
my pen, swore this decree to air.

Then set to work on bended knee,
a childlike creep through house and street,
to clean through what’s encrusted there.

It’s done for you, kind reader, dear,
who walks my words across the page,
who seeks clear space in marks I make:

that glisten in your gleaning eye,
that shines with mine, us both to see
how in the clearing, all can be.

As a thank you, you will receive a film poem and audio version of "The Writer's Call" on signing up as a patron (at any level).

Thank You

If you do decide to become a patron today, please accept my appreciation for your support and encouragement of my work.

With all my various commitments, it can get busy at times. Knowing you love poetry enough to offer support here encourages me to turn from the daily doings and give myself over to the place the poetry comes from--and the company of other passion-powered, enterprise-minded poets.

Goals
$87 of $1,000 per month
I know some people think it's unpoetic to have a goal of earning money from poetry--but I hope to show that sort of thinking is muddled.

Poets must eat, like everyone else, and though profit is never our first motive, it can be built into how we do things, without derailing our creative intentions or diluting our principles.

Indeed, I'd argue that paying attention to what our readers value in our work makes us better, more engaged poets. Not writing to market but writing for and with our fans and followers.

That's what's happening here, on Patreon, and through other forms of digital publishing. Such platforms are creating new and exciting commercial and creative opportunities for poets.

I explore and explain these digital opportunities here on Patreon, in a monthly Making A Life and A Living In Poetry podcast, which is exclusive to my poet patrons.

When we reach this four-figure financial goal together, I'll create
the following to celebrate:
  • Making A Life and A Living As A Poet: guidebook and masterclass course, which I'll make free to all my poet patrons.
  • a special-edition celebratory collection Gratitude: The Patreon Collection in print hardback, which I'll mail to all patrons as a thank-you.
