Opportunities for homeless kids and teens

I'm a clinical mental health counselor working in a rural county on the north coast of California

Milestone Goals
Nurturance = emotional and physical nourishment given to someone
$100 per month
At this level I would be able to take each of my clients out to lunch at least once a month. It is important to get kids/teens into the community where they can practice social skills, be exposed to different kinds of food and people, and have an enjoyable stress free meal with a trustworthy adult who gives them unconditional positive regard. My favorite places to go with clients are to the university café where they can see students who look like they do, bay side to watch the boats and fishermen, a small airport to watch planes take off and land, or a picnic at the redwood forest or beach. I'll also be investing in art supplies for goal #2 when I can.
Art therapy and...
$500 per month
At this level, I can provide a depth of art supplies, instruction, and related materials for clients. This level will  also reflect the child or teen's personal interests (i.e., model airplanes, bird house making supplies, art books, group art activities like mural painting, etc.)

"The healthiest form of projection is art" Fritz Perls

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way---things I had no words for" Georgia O'Keefe

"Art is the creation of forms symbolic of human feelings" Susanne Langer

"Art is a wound turned into light" Georges Braque

"If you're feeling blue, try painting yourself a different color" Hannah Cheatem, age 8

Enough said!

Customize the dream!
$2,000 per month
WOW! This is the level where I can invest serious resources specific to each client's personal dreams, needs, or goals. Examples: educational "camps" for the budding coder or biologist, martial arts or yoga classes, a real bed instead of a mattress on the floor, tutoring for those who may be struggling in a particular subject, appropriate work or school clothing, a prom dress....the list is endless. Whether a one time expense or ongoing fees, this level will help to fund transformative experiences for these young people.

About

I'm a nationally certified mental health counselor, a professional clinical counselor intern, and a yoga therapist with 25 years experience. My interest is in the mental health needs of people who are underserved due to homelessness, low socio-economic status, location, ethnicity, sexual orientation, immigration status, and/or those who have severe mental health challenges. I work with kids, families, teens, and young adults. I am passionate about this work.

Why I am on Patreon.

My name is Parri. My work takes place at a small non-profit agency that aids homeless families, teens, and adults by providing transitional housing and other resources to help people get back on their feet. This county has one of the highest percentages of people with Adverse Childhood Experiences. (Read more about ACE research here: http://www.acestudy.org/).

I specifically work one on one with kids, teens, and young adults who have experienced generations of poverty, addiction, trauma, and abuse.

What you are funding

Your funds will be transformed into broadening experiences, materials, and resources for kids and teens who would not otherwise be exposed to or could afford such things (i.e., social and community activities; interesting and educational speakers or mentors; recreational activities of all kinds; special meals; art supplies;  material needs and/or resources like books, classes, and tutoring).

In other words, you are funding resilience-- “The more capacity that caregivers, schools, communities, and service providers have to provide children with the resources they need, the more likely children are to take advantage of opportunities to enhance their well being…” (Ungar, 2015).

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
(Seuss, 1971)

Due to the confidential nature of the client-counselor relationship, I will not be able to post pictures of the clients you are helping. I will however post how your funding is being spent and a general description of how the client(s) experienced this activity or resource. I also intend to post thought provoking articles about social psychology, which you, the patron, may find interesting. I hope we engage in thoughtful dialogue about these topics.

Thank you for considering this project,
Parri
