Hello! I'm Chris Bratt and I like telling interesting stories about video games and the people who make them.

I've spent the last 18 months doing just that for Eurogamer. I've told the story of a voice actor who didn't know he was working on Fallout 4, I've investigated what happens to your Steam account when you die, and I've revealed the Dead Space 3 that the developers actually wanted to make.

I'm extremely proud of this work but the unfortunate reality of YouTube advertising has meant that, up until now, I've not been able to commit to it full-time. YouTube is built for daily uploads, not videos that can take multiple weeks to create.

Despite this, I believe there's a really dedicated audience for quality games journalism in this space. So why rely on YouTube? Patreon offers a way for audiences to directly fund good work.

And so... I've quit my dream job to find out if I can be a part of that.

So, why Patreon?

The kind of stories I want to tell require a lot of work. Days of research, interviews, writing, rewriting, filming and editing. I think I've proven that I can find great stories, but I want to tell them better and I want to finally spend enough time on their presentation.

Patreon allows creators to change the way they work, putting the quality of videos before the quantity of them. It means relying less on YouTube for an income and telling stories because they're the right stories to tell, not because they'll get the most hits.

How often do I pay?

Once per month. Right now, we're hoping to publish new episodes every three to four weeks, although if we get our teeth stuck into something BIG, we may dedicate more time to that story. In the unlikely case that we don't publish anything in a month, we won't charge you.

Where's the money going?

I've left my position at Eurogamer and intend to work full-time on People Make Games. With that in mind, it'd be nice to be able to pay for things like new equipment and socks.

However, we've got bigger plans than just that! With enough support, I'll be working alongside an animator to bring these videos to life. A lot of the stories we tell don't offer a lot in terms of assets (photos, screenshots, gameplay footage), but we don't think that should hold us back. If enough of you back this project of ours, we want our work to be beautifully animated. Great stories deserve great visuals.

Anything else to say?

Just a big, massive thank you. This is the scariest thing I've ever done, but I really believe in what we've got planned here. With your help, I can't wait to get started!
