Hello! We’re the creators of People Make Games, a YouTube channel dedicated to telling fantastic stories about video games and those who bring them to life.

Since our launch in 2018, we’ve published videos revealing the personal cost that followed the closure of Telltale Games, we discovered how Neopets was sold to a group of Scientologists and we examined the ethical implications of Epic Games recreating dance moves in Fortnite without the original creators’ permission.

Our goal with this channel has always been a simple one: we want to remind our audience that games don’t just pop into existence. There’s a name, a voice and a story behind every aspect of every game you’ve ever played. We want to show that in our work.

The video games industry is an incredible place, but it’s also not without its faults. You’ve likely heard the recent horror stories about game developers being overworked, underpaid and mistreated by their employers. Even when that’s not the case, it’s not uncommon to see people who work in games becoming the targets of harassment campaigns via social media or on YouTube.

The coming years, we hope, will see things improve. For the first time in its history, the games industry is now starting to unionise and we’ve already seen developers at one of the biggest studios in the world walk out of work to demand better treatment. The way in which video games are being made is set to change and we’ll be here to document how and why.

But we think there’s another important role we can play with People Make Games. It’s a lot easier to ignore working conditions in an industry that appears faceless and so in a small way, we’d like to help push back against that.

By sharing developers’ stories, both their successes and their failures, we can better humanise the work they do. People Make Games isn't just the name of our channel, it's our message. If that’s something you’d like to see more of in this industry, then we could use certainly your support!

Why Patreon?

The kind of stories we tell require a lot of work. Days of research, interviews, writing, rewriting, storyboarding, illustrating, animating, filming and editing. It’s a lot. And that’s the way it should be.

Patreon allows creators to spend more time on their work, putting the quality of videos before the quantity of them. It means relying less on YouTube for an income and as a result, it means we can tell stories because they're the right stories to tell, not because they'll get the most hits.

What are the benefits of becoming a patron?

First and foremost, you'll be the reason we get to do what we do. People Make Games couldn't exist without the generous support of its audience. But we do offer some fun rewards too!

All of our $2+ patrons gain access to the People Make Games Discord server. You’ll spot Anni and Chris hanging out here most days, but more importantly, it’s also a great place to get to know the rest of the superb PMG community.

At the $5 tier, you’ll receive an exclusive monthly video in which Chris talks you through what we’ve been working on recently and anything important we’re thinking about regarding the channel or what’s going on in video games. Here’s our Patreon Show from January, if you want an idea of what to expect.

$10 patrons will see their names included in the credits of every episode we publish, plus they’ll gain access to all of our behind-the-scenes videos. These include extended interviews, directors commentary and other bits and pieces we think you’ll enjoy.

And finally, at our highest tier, you’ll receive a bespoke art print from Anni each and every month accompanied by a note from the team. Just let us know your address and we’ll handle the postage!

Anything else to say?

Just a big, massive thank you. We work super hard to make PMG what it is, but this is a dream job for the both of us. Your support means so much.
