About

My name is Phil Johnson and I am a working artist in the Portland Metro area and a founding member of Confrontation Theater. I am a multidisciplinary artist who likes to express in as many art forms as possible. In undergrad I studied acting, film and production design and have been lucky enough to work on a range of projects from Grimm and several other film projects, to designing mainstage shows for Portland Center Stage.

In terms of visual art, I would consider myself a neo-expressionist and surrealist who focuses on the realities of the human condition especially as it relates to myself as an African American. My first series “Visual Poetry” focused on technology and its effects on human expression.

My second series "Offensive images" was a reaction to the swelling Black lives matter movement and murders of Travon Martin, Tamir Rice, and countless other black bodies that suffered under the "offensive" American Regime.

My third series "Heritage" was an opportunity to simplify portraits of my family members using a modernized abstract design. I wanted to work in primary colors, simple shapes and lines yet still find a way to give each characterization a little "personality".

Virtual Sonic Reality started as an art project that used three dimensional sonic landscapes as a method of creating virtual reality experience. Every "Sonic Reality" is carefully constructed to tell a particular story.

I have also done several sound, light and Installation pieces including "Free" which was installed for the opening of An Octoroon at Artist Repertory Theater in 2017 and my Portland debut, “Electric Hell”  for the Cascade High grand opening party.  It is my honor and privilege to be able to share my work with the portland community and hope for many more displays and collaborations to come. If you would like to get to know a little more about what I do or want to get in touch about an upcoming project feel free to contact me via the website or social media. Every subscriber and donor helps me continue to support the Portland artistic community and continue this work. PEACE!
