Hello. My name is Kathleen and I am 25 years old. I am a self-taught artist. Ever since I can remember, I have been drawing and creating art. My very first piece of “art” was created out of one of my mom’s oil paintings when I was two years of age. Of course, everyone knows how kids just love to put their hands on everything. I was no exception. She had her still wet oil painting in the closet for safekeeping. My grandmother was supposed to have been watching me that day, but she was upstairs reading her nursing books in preparation of getting her nursing degree while I was in the basement “playing” while mom was at work. I was always a curious child and got into a lot of trouble for it. I happened upon mom’s oil painting and I just had to get my hands on it. I smeared the fine details all over the canvas. The vibrant colors mixing and distorting drew me into it more. I had so much fun while my time was being absorbed into the painting. Before I knew it, mom was home. I vaguely remember hearing her footsteps coming down the stairs. I met her at the bottom of the stairway with a grin. I was so proud of what I had done that I took her over to show her. Surprisingly, she was not angry with me over destroying her beautiful painting. After that incident, she put it up to dry and gave it to close friends for Christmas. I have been drawing ever since. As far as where I am from; I am currently living in Fayetteville, TN. It’s a small town compared to what I’m used to. I was born in Detroit, MI then moved down to Columbia, AL when I turned ten years old. Since then, I had moved to Kentucky for eight months, back to Alabama, and now I have been in Tennessee for about three years.
I’m working on getting my bachelor's degree in Media Arts and Animation. I have always loved Japanese animations; anime, and the style they use. My fascination of anime really took to a new level in high school. Anime became my everyday escape. The more I watched, the more I wanted to draw. But I wanted more out of it. I wanted my characters to have life and be able to move like they do in animations. There was only so much I could at the time, though. I didn’t have my own computer with the fancy art programs. I had no idea how digital art was created. I thought there were just some really good artists out there who made no mistakes and scanned their art onto the computer, but then I looked into it more. I learned about digital art and the programs and software needed to create it. I talked to my mother about it, and eventually she took me to buy my first Wacom tablet after graduating from high school. And that’s when I really became obsessed with art.
Now when I create art, I push myself to the next level. Art is not just a hobby to me. It is a life style. The more challenging it becomes, the more fascinating and fun it is to create. Imagination is key and with art, nothing is impossible.
