Pixel Playbox is Anthony and Trevor. 2 guys who love games and are making games.
We have known each other since 1987 when we both worked for a computer and video games software distributor.  Over the years we have worked in many businesses in the computer and video game industry. Our current passion is making games with a heavy retro twang.  Our current project is 'Knights Of The Celestial Sky'  an 8 Bit style shooter rooted in classics like Gaunlet (Atari), Atic Atac (Ultimate) and Smash TV (Williams). To find out more about the game head over to KOTCS.com or PixelPlaybox.co.uk.

Anthony: Graphics and Design

Anthony’s love of video games and design all started with his first computer which was a ZX Spectrum 48k. Many hours were spent playing classics like Head Over Heels, Cybernoid, Monty Mole, Jack The Nipper & Jetpac. Moving on from there to own multiple home computers and home consoles, like the Super Nintendo, SNK Neo Geo, Commodore Amiga, Gameboy, PS Vita and many more.

Later, he worked for a software distribution and retail company called ‘Exeter Software’ and this allowed access to all the top game titles, which just fuelled his love for games even more. At Exeter Software he also worked on the design and graphics for a series of educational games that were released for Amiga, Atari ST and PC in the early 1990’s.

Anthony also got the chance to work on a home brewed software title on the Commodore Amiga called ‘Sink Or Swim’ which was published by Zeppelin Games in 1997. This game has good success on both the Amiga and PC and was then licensed to Codemasters and released on the Sega Megadrive and Game Gear. The game was also seen to have potential on the Super Nintendo and was licensed for release on the SNES by Titus Software.

Anthony then went to work for independent video game retailer IT Games and helped the company expand in the South West of England to become one of the biggest independent retailers in the country specializing in video games, imported software from Japan / US and merchandise.

In 2001, Anthony worked for King Rollo Films, who released Maisy Mouse, Spot The Dog and Elmer. He worked there for over 2 years and worked as a tracer/animator and supervised a small team to help bring these shows to Nickelodeon. They were much loved children's books originally and these animation shows are a great success.

Anthony has been the lead graphics artist with Pixel Playbox and also one of the lead designers, working on released projects like Meteor Maths on iOS / Android and Poppits for Windows phone. He has also been working on other in-house projects, which will hopefully be a reality in the future.

Here at Pixel Playbox we are currently working hard on Knights Of The Celestial Sky and Anthony has been working on both the design and pixel art. He has his own unique 8 bit style which is really coming together now.

Anthony has a love of movies, anime and video game design which is definitely a good thing when coming up with ideas for new creations with the computer. Photoshop is the preferred software to create in game graphics and also Procreate on the iPad Pro to produce lavish concept art and also the pixel art.

He has taken an interest in 3D modelling with small projects in-house and is keen to learn more about 3D mesh work and character models.

His main hobby apart from graphic design and movies is playing Call Of Duty on his PS4 and loves nothing more than to get into a mosh pit of online multiplayer and taking on all that dare. Fancy playing against him, just locate him under his gamer tag: Ninjawacker

Knights Of The Celestial Sky will be released on PC in the first instance and then consoles at a later date.

Fun Fact: The most expensive video game Anthony has ever purchased was ‘Viewpoint’ on the Neo Geo home console...price an eye watering £185.00

Trevor: Programming and design

Trevor’s earliest video game memories are a binatone 6-in-1 pong clone on a black and white TV. Playing chess on a ZX81 computer. Putting money in the games in the Arcades at a north Devon beach. The first computer he owned was ZX Spectrum 48K with Planetoids, Flight Simulator, Mindout, Horace goes skiing, Atic Atac and Alchemist. These early days were an excellent education in programming as he was always typing in listings from the magazines.

Trevor owns pretty much every games console that has been released. His personal favorite is the Sega Master System and if he had to pick a game it would be ‘Y’s The Vanished Omens’ which is also a great game on PC Engine. His favorite game of all time is hard to choose but he will tell you that he loves the Zelda series of games especially ‘Links Awakening’ on game boy.

He met Anthony in 1987 while working at Exeter Software where he managed various parts of the business and with Anthony helped plan, design and program some educational software that was released on Amiga, Atari ST and PC. In 1992 Trevor with Anthony’s help started a retail business specializing in selling new, used and imported video games. This business eventually grew to be one of the top independent game retailers in the country (UK) until it closed in 2008.

Since 2008 he has worked on various projects and is now a web designer and advises small businesses on web technologies, social media and SEO.

A few years ago Anthony and Trevor were discussing the idea of working on educational software again eventually releasing 3 titles for ios / android / pc and windows phone. Since then they have decided to concentrate on games software and after a few demos are now working hard on ‘Knights of the Celestial Sky’ a retro game inspired by some of the great arcade games of the early to mid 80’s.

Trevor is a massive fan of reading and is currently obsessed with collecting books about the history of computers and video games. He also has a growing anime collection and is one of the few people that seems to like the live action version of 'Ghost In the Shell'.

Fun Fact: Trevor owns an original space invaders arcade machine.

It would be great if we could spend more of our time working on own our projects. It takes a long time to put a game together and we already have the basic game play and controls of a game ready.

Designing and planning levels takes an age and your support would help us work less, need to pay the bills, and work more on creating fantastic retro inspired games that are fun to play.
