The future is already here—it just needs its own podcast.

If you’re trying to understand mass culture in 2019, you already know you need to address this thing we call “science fiction.” That’s where we come in. Podside Picnic uses the lens of classic and contemporary sci-fi to explore the landscapes of the narrative arts and the world that creates them. We do that by digging into canonical sci-fi novels, reviewing new movies, analyzing classic films, and even playing video games. From William Gibson to Ursula K. Le Guin, from Horizon: Zero Dawn to Solaris, we've got you covered. We also chat with guests--including, so far, Lucy ValentineWill MenakerBryan Quinby, and others--about their interest in the genre.

Podside Picnic is a discussion about science fiction, but it's also a journey. Connor (@ConnorSouthard) is a writer who needs to learn about the genre, and Pete (@Whandall) has been reading it seriously for 40 years. Together, we're meandering through the many galaxies of science fiction, with possible detours as the adventure demands. It's about learning, but it's also about deepening our enjoyment (and occasional hatred) of these stories. We've also just started a patrons-only Discord group chat, to help us build a community around Podside Picnic.

If you subscribe, you'll get full access to all of our content, including but not limited to:
  • In-depth analysis of classic sci-fi novels
  • Dissections of classic sci-fi films
  • Reviews of new sci-fi-inflected movies currently in theaters
  • Chats with esteemed guests about their interests and experiences with the genre
  • Access to our exclusive Discord chat server, where you can discuss whatever with Connor, Pete, and your fellow Podsiders
And follow along with us! We'll try to give advance notice of book discussions in particular. Upcoming book episodes:

7/23 -- The Underground Railroad, by Colson Whitehead
All of August -- Dune, by Frank Herbert

For now, paid subscriptions will help us recoup expenses (Connor, at least, has some books to buy) and pay our contributing artists, as well as giving you access to exclusive content. Now that we've hit 100 patrons, we're planning to do at least three exclusives per month. We'll go up to a minimum of four if we can get to 250 patrons. We also do informal "Beer Run" exclusives as the fancy strikes us, so we're never short of new content. As we go forward, we'll also continue to poll and chat with patrons about what you want as exclusives. In general, we'll try to keep you involved in shaping Podside Picnic, and the best way to contribute is to become a patron and join the Discord! Also we'll do our best to follow back any patrons who follow the official Twitter account: @PodsideP

Our theme music and sound editing is by @nachdermas, and our logo is by @XEECEEVEVO. Check out them and their work!

Thanks for listening! You can get our audio here, on SoundCloud, or on iTunes.

Having reached 100 patrons, we now owe you at least three exclusives each month. If we can get to 250 subscribers, we will go to at least four exclusives per month. Beyond that, we'll continue to play it by ear, with the aim of always producing more and better content if we can continue to grow our subscriber base.
